Position Overview: The Adult Services Assistant is supervised by the Assistant Library Director and collaborates closely with them to develop, plan, and oversee library programming for adults and all-ages audiences. The role also involves organizing special programs in collaboration with local groups as well as community outreach. The Adult Services Assistant also offers reference and tech help services when needed. Some collection development will also be required. As the PPML is a team-oriented environment, all employees are required to cover different departments, when necessary, especially on the Circulation Desk. This position requires night and weekend shifts.
Key Responsibilities:
The Adult Services Assistant supports a wide range of public service, programming, and community engagement functions. Responsibilities include planning and facilitating adult and all-ages programs, coordinating marketing efforts, and maintaining accurate program and collection budgets. The role assists with the selection and maintenance of library materials, analyzes collection data, and stays current with industry trends. Public service duties include providing reference and technology assistance, supporting passport services, offering readers’ advisory, and covering the Circulation Desk as needed. The position also fosters community connections through outreach, participates in local events, and delivers materials or welcome resources to residents. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience working in a library or related public service environment; working knowledge of library practices and procedures; familiarity with library-specific and standard office computer applications; understanding of ComCat and Interlibrary Loan processes; and knowledge of state and local library policies. Strong oral and written communication skills; customer service skills; ability to use mobile devices, library applications, GSuite, and basic design or social media tools such as Canva or Library Aware.
Preferred Qualifications:
A master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution; experience in a public library setting; demonstrated skill in reference services, readers’ advisory, and adult programming; and knowledge of local, state, and national reference resources. Experience developing social media content or press releases is also preferred.
Compensation & Benefits:
This is a full-time position classified as Grade A2, with a rate of $30.85- $36.87/hr. ±. The Town of Cohasset offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, along with a comprehensive benefits package.
