Heritage Park is Canada's largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The Park features historical buildings, costumed interpreters, working antiques, and various exhibits that provide insight into the region's past.

Job Overview:

Under the direction of the Chief Engineer, the Train Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Heritage park's train. This position involves operating and maintaining the train's engine, collaborating with the train crew, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.  

Responsibilities:

Train Operations

  • Operates the train during Park visitor hours, ensuring a safe and smooth passenger experience 
  • Operate and control the train's steam or diesel engine during scheduled rides 
  • Monitor engine performance, speed, and other critical parameters to ensure a smooth ride 
  • Perform routine inspections on the train's engine to identify and address any maintenance needs and report regularly on the condition of the engine and any operational challenges 
  • Tests connections between cars and assesses the operation of all equipment 
  • Ensures that train cars are safe for passenger transport 
  • Oversee the fuelling of the engine, ensuring an adequate and safe fuel supply for scheduled rides 
  • Maintain an inventory of necessary supplies and report shortages to the Chief Engineer 
  • Report and collaborate with maintenance personnel on any issues requiring repairs or adjustments 
  • Collaborate closely with the Chief Engineer to implement maintenance schedules and ensure the overall reliability of the train 
  • Maintain accurate records of engine operation, maintenance activities, fuel consumption, and incidents as well as update relevant logbooks and report necessary information to the Chief Engineer 
  • Ensure all staff on the train follow emergency procedures and respond promptly in the event of engine-related issues or other emergencies, coordinating the emergency response by directing the Train Crew and alerting the Chief Engineer and other relevant personnel of the emergency situation 
  • Adhere to and enforce safety protocols, procedures, and guidelines during all aspects of train operation 
  • Collaborate with the Chief Engineer to conduct regular safety briefings for the train crew 
  • Assist the Chief Engineer in training new and existing train crew members on engine operation and safety procedures 
  • Provide guidance and support to less experienced crew members 
  • Create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors with a customer-focused approach, providing courteous and friendly customer service and information to enhance the overall visitor experience 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Enrolment in or completion of 4th Class Power Engineering certification is required 
  • Completion of Heritage Park in-house railway certification (HROR) is required before operation (training will be provided) 
  • Minimum 6 month’s experience in locomotive operations and maintenance is required 
  • Familiarity with steam locomotives would be an asset 
  • Prior experience working in a COR (Certificate of Recognition for Health and Safety) certified organization is an asset 
  • Knowledge of safety procedures related to engine operations 
  • Keen attentiveness to surroundings and strong observational skills to ensure safety protocols are followed, including vigilant monitoring for pedestrians, obstacles, or potential hazards within the operating environment 
  • The ability to detect problems and solve them quickly and efficiently is necessary 
  • Excellent demonstrated communication skills (verbal and written) 
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in a client-faced setting 
  • Commitment to continuous learning and development 
  • All successful candidates (over the age of 18) will be required to go through a Police Information Check as a condition of employment.   

Special Clothing and Equipment:

  • Appropriate costuming and safety equipment will be provided by Heritage Park; 
  • Employees are eligible for a CSA-approved footwear allowance to ensure their safety and compliance with workplace regulations 

Special Working Conditions: 

  • The position will be exposed to weather extremes and will work both indoors and outdoors 
  • This position is physically demanding, and the incumbent must have the ability to lift heavy items 
  • This position requires a considerable amount of walking, standing for long periods of time, walking through the Park for extended periods and other strenuous duties  

Hours of Work: 

  • The standard hours for this position are 40 hours per week 
  • The schedule will generally consist of 2 working days followed by 4 rest days 
  • Holiday and evening work may be required
