As a member of the Team, this staff person will have a broad working knowledge of all areas of The Mustard Seed’s services in Kamloops. The Outreach Support Worker will work closely community members by encouraging them in their journey and connecting them with programs and services so that they can have a positive experience in The Mustard Seed’s programs.  This is a front-line staff member that responds to the needs of the community participants on an ongoing basis. The position also works alongside our many volunteers and ensures that they are supported, trained, and cared for. Crisis intervention and de-escalation will be regular occurrences for this role.

Position Type: Seasonal Employment - Part time
Hourly Rate: $15.20 hourly

Schedule: 35 hours per week
Reporting to: Basic Services Manager
Number of Positions to Fill: 1

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Professionalism, respect and gratitude with all staff, donors, volunteers, community members and visitors
  • Maintain COVID19 protocol and encourage guests to follow these guidelines
  • Ensure services are delivered in a respectful and safe environment while enforcing facilities rules, expected code of conduct, and building cleanliness at all TMS facilities
  • Model healthy relationships with community participants and volunteers by listening, counseling, praying, and referring
  • Communicate issues and concerns to supervisors in a proactive respectful manner
  • Maintain specific records, stats and incident reports on log books and computer files and maintain proper radio communication at all TMS facilities
  • Brief, de-brief and pray with both staff and volunteer groups when necessary
  • Ensure daily tidiness and cleanliness of work area
  • Participate in all staff training and attend monthly general meetings and support meetings with supervisor
  • Enter all appropriate case notes in client record books; record residential data using best practices and company protocol
  • Communicate progress, concerns, and behavioural changes to other staff while on duty and during staff changeover
  • Support and work alongside volunteers, act as a positive Mustard Seed ambassador
  • Provide a strong foundation for the community by upholding boundaries and rules; respond quickly to individuals in crisis, minimize the harm to the individual and others, use de-escalation skills and assist the individual to explore options and seek restorative justice
  • Ensure the welcoming and professional reception of people who contact The Mustard Seed by telephone, in person or by email; ensure first contact with clients, potential volunteers visitors and donors is positive
  • Facilitate communication within The Mustard Seed by directing phone calls to appropriate persons and coordinating the efficient distribution of phone messages, mail, faxes and emails
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS: 

  • Enrolled in diploma and/or certificate program in Human Services, Social Work or in Theology is considered an asset
  • Interest in social work, human services, counselling, or ministry considered an asset
  • A demonstrated passion to be involved in ending poverty in British Columbia is essential
  • 1-2 years’ experience working with a vulnerable population considered an asset
  • Organizational skill and ability to carry all and delivery of front line programs
  • Experience working in a volunteer-based organization is considered an asset
  • Competent knowledge of MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) 
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and conflict resolution skills
  • A proactive and self-starter individual
  • A team player, who works collaboratively and has a ‘teachable spirit’              
  • Ability to work independently and in a cross-functional team
  • Integrity, discretion and tact dealing with confidential matters
  • Knowledge of mental illness and addictions is an asset
  • Valid Standard First Aid and Food Safety Certification is strongly desired

 WORKING CONDITIONS: 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • An Employment Background Check is required for all positions at The Mustard Seed
  • As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry, we require our employees to agree to respect and not detract from The Mustard Seed’s Employment Values during their employment at The Mustard Seed.
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • Must be returning for the fall semester at a post-secondary institution

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be between 18 and 30 years of age
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • Not a member of the Immediate Family of the Employer or a member of the Immediate Family of an officer or director of the Employer
  • International students are not eligible participants
