Director of Teaching and Learning

The National WWII Museum is seeking a Director of Teaching and Learning to oversee all Museum initiatives related to the onsite, offsite, classroom-based, and digital learning experiences and programs for K-12 audiences.  Leading a team of Museum educators, the Director will shape the mission and vision for the Museum’s teacher, student, and distance learning initiatives, focusing on diverse American experiences of WWII.  This will include evaluating current efforts and devising strategies for future programming and content to increase reach and quality.  With the Associate Vice President of Education, the Director will drive educational content distribution to ensure the Museum’s resources are widely utilized and accessible and meet the needs of educators and their students.


  • Long-term planning with a team of assistant directors and education specialists working on distance learning and onsite, classroom-based, and travel-based programs for students and teachers.
  • Ensuring programs are created in a collaborative and holistic manner across the team to provide maximum benefit to the Museum’s constituents.
  • Creating and executing strategies to expand the reach of the Museum’s initiatives for both a local and national audience.
  • Steering evaluation of effectiveness of current educational programs and working with the team to refine, grow, and create new programming efforts.
  • Leveraging existing and fostering new institutional partnerships and teacher networks.
  • Working with the Director of Public Engagement to maximize opportunities for collaboration across the Education Department.


  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Education, Public History, Museum Studies, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in executing large-scale programs for teachers or students.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience managing a team.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills; experience with strategic planning is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience in working with or at a district or state-level education department is preferred, but not required.
  • Familiarity with national and state-level education pedagogy, trends, technology, and standards.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
