Senior Center Assistant Coordinator
St. James Parish Government is hiring a Senior Center Assistant Coordinator for the Department of Human Services/Elderly Services.
JOB FUNCTION: The Assistant Coordinator will assist in organizing and maintaining a high level of activity at a center operated for senior citizens. He/she must be able to work closely with elderly people and must have some knowledge and ability related to recreational and social activities suited to older participants. Continuing education, including nutrition education to the elderly must be promoted. Also, assist in financial and programmatic reporting which must be completed each month. This position is classified as essential during declared emergencies or natural disasters and non-exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinate all
recreational activities including ceramics, quilting, crochet, bingo, cards,
and any other such activity suitable for participants at the center
· Assess and re-assess the needs of clients using tools provided by agency
· Coordinate the information and referral system at the center including limited supervision of Title V, and other workers in related programs
· Implement ideas obtained from trainings and conferences
· Assist as necessary in the preparation of programmatic records of services delivered
· Establish and supervise outreach, telephone reassurance and counseling services
· Provide for continuing education, including nutrition education to the elderly
· Supervise and assist in the serving of congregate meals and the delivery of home delivered meals under direction of Center Coordinator.
· Must be willing and able to drive a van to bring seniors on field trips, pick up seniors when transit is unable and be available to deliver meals when Meals Driver is out. Chauffer’s license is required.
· Complete senior center report each month as well as any reoccurring monthly, bi-weekly or annual reports necessary.
· Serve refreshments during activities with assistance from volunteers, Title V workers, and etc.
· Coordinate activities with other centers in St. James Parish and with other agencies providing services to the elderly
· Recruit new participants and volunteers
· Provide information to the elderly including, but not limited to Medicare, Medication Management, Medical issues, Protective services, Tax information, New Laws or bills regarding elderly
· Assist with coordinating service of congregate meals and the delivery of home delivered meals
· Establish and maintain an accurate filing system and keep an accurate inventory of supplies by entering purchase requisitions and/or purchasing supplies as needed
· Coordinate activities with other centers in St. James Parish and with other agencies providing services to the elderly
· Perform special and related duties or assignments as requested
· Should be a self-starter, highly motivated and an innovator
· Strong written and verbal communication skills
· Basic computer skills and a willingness to work with a diverse population
· Establish and maintain good working relationships with the elderly population served and co-workers
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: Must have a valid Louisiana Class “D†driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or its equivalent; Experience working with the public, specifically within the elderly community is preferred.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, and divide in all units of measurement using whole numbers.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Yes, this individual will assist in supervising staff when Center Coordinator is out or unavailable.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand,
sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee must
occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds related to typical senior center
functions such as carrying meals and supplies, etc. Specific vision abilities
required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral
vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors and within the senior center environment.
