Position Summary
Responsible for the allocation of organs and the coordination of the organ donation process during the recovery of organs for transplantation and research. Develops and maintains a positive professional liaison between LOPA and the medical/civic community. Utilizes discretion and sensitivity with respect to the circumstances, views and beliefs of others in all interactions, including donor families.
Essential Functions
- Coordination of the multi organ donation process with respect to organ allocation including assessing patient records, sharing information with transplant centers, and ensuring equitable allocation of donated organs
- Reviews BD notes, DRAI, authorization form, DCD consult and death note, serology results, HLA results, OR documentation, and all relevant paperwork for accuracy
- Facilitation of data documentation and reporting mechanisms as required by LOPA and OPTN
- Completes initial entry of donor information in UNET and updates as needed
- Interpret and apply OPTN standards for organ sharing
- Communicates with Recovery Coordinator regarding donor condition and history
- Communicates with transplant centers regarding donor history, condition, transportation of organs/specimens, anatomy, and any other relevant information
- Communicates with AOC, APC, and Recovery Coordinator a clear plan of allocation with intent to place every organ viable for transplant
- Facilitates organs and tissues for research once transplantation is no longer an option
- Verifies that recovery surgeons are in the ACIN database
- Coordinates travel arrangements for recovery teams
- Knowledge of how to transport tissue, blood and organs to ensure optimal condition of each
- Complete all required documentation related to donor referral and recovery

Role Progression
- Progression to Placement Coordinator II includes successful completion of Placement Coordinator I orientation and competency in all requirements of the Placement Coordinator I job role.
- Completion of LOPA’s preceptor program
Work Environment
- Possible exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, airborne illnesses, hazardous materials, pharmacological agents with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
- May, at times, have exposure to blood, packaged organs and tissues for transplant and/or research in a hospital setting or while in the office.
- Possible mental and visual fatigue associated with detailed work
- Work is done indoors in an office setting
- Work in a fast-paced environment with a sometimes demanding time schedule
Physical Demands
- Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces.

Work Hours
- Full time, On-Call position
- Scheduled up to 12 days/24 call shifts per month
- Available as needed Monday-Friday 8am to 5pm unless on PTO
- Holiday call rotation of each individual holiday
- Maintains personal and professional balance, takes care of self
Education and Experience
- Medical terminology with experience in patient care setting
- RN, LPN, CST preferred
- Previous OPO experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite
- Ability to deliver effective and professional verbal and written communication
- Ability to establish and maintain relationships with internal and external colleagues
- Ability to apply common sense understanding and to solve problems
