Position Status: Full Time, Seasonal

Start Date: June 2023 for Summer

Location: Big Cove Camp, Thorburn, NS

The Opportunity

Big Cove YMCA Camp is a residential summer camp for children aged 6–16 located in Sutherlands River, Nova Scotia. Big Cove is the oldest residential camp in Canada, founded by the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth in 1889. At camp, we believe that our exciting programs and dedicated staff are truly the pinnacle of the Big Cove Camp experience.

Our staff are not only leaders but friends, teachers and role models to all of our campers. Camp staff members are a dedicated group of responsible young adults carefully selected for their character, maturity, skills and sincere interest in the growth and development of youth.

Counsellors live with and take care of a cabin of 8-10 campers and work alongside a co-counsellor for the summer.

This position requires strong leadership and independence, teamwork, a caring nature and willingness to have fun. Throughout the summer, counsellors may have the opportunity to have Leadership shadows, take part in a maintenance or kitchen rotation, or be a leader in the 2 week leadership program.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the care and supervision of their campers, providing each camper with a positive camping experience
Instruct cabin programs as well as interest group programs which include: swimming, canoeing, drama, archery, high ropes and many more
Required to live on site during the camp season

Qualifications & Skills

Must be 17 years of age by December 31, 2023
Strong attention to detail
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Minimum qualifications: Standard First Aid, Bronze Cross and CPR-C, WHIMIS (NLS strongly recommended – additional $25/week)
Recommended qualifications: NLS, Wilderness First Aid, Outdoor Council of Canada, Paddle Canada Certification

Please note that successful candidates are required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check, clear Child Abuse Registry Check, and proof of valid First Aid and CPR training. All YMCA employees are required to attend YMCA Child Protection Training.
