The Dietary Aide/Cook is responsible for assisting in the preparation, service, and cleanup of meals while ensuring compliance with food safety, sanitation, and dietary guidelines. This role supports the nutrition and well-being of residents/patients by providing safe, appetizing, and properly prepared meals.

Key Responsibilities

Cooking & Food Preparation
  • Prepare and cook meals according to menus, standardized recipes, and dietary restrictions
  • Ensure food is cooked to proper temperatures and served on time
  • Assist with food prep tasks such as chopping, portioning, and assembling meals
  • Follow therapeutic diets (e.g., low sodium, diabetic, pureed diets)
Food Service
  • Serve meals to residents/patients, ensuring correct trays and portions
  • Deliver trays and assist with mealtime setup as needed
  • Maintain a clean and organized serving area
Sanitation & Safety
  • Follow all food safety regulations (FDA, state health department, or facility policies)
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen, equipment, and dining areas
  • Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment
  • Properly store food and supplies to prevent contamination
Inventory & Organization
  • Assist with stocking supplies and rotating food inventory
  • Report shortages or equipment issues to supervisors
  • Help receive and unload deliveries
Customer Service
  • Interact respectfully with residents, patients, and team members
  • Accommodate special dietary needs and preferences when possible
  • Promote a positive dining experience

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Previous experience in food service or healthcare dietary setting preferred
  • Ability to follow instructions and recipes accurately
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Lift and carry up to 25–50 pounds
  • Work in hot or cold kitchen environments

Work Schedule

  • Full-Time: Typically 30–40 hours/week, may include weekends and holidays
  • Part-Time: Flexible hours, evenings/weekends as needed

Work Environment

  • Healthcare facilities (nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living) or institutional kitchens
  • Fast-paced environment requiring attention to detail and cleanliness
