Supervisory Responsibilities
Teaching Assistant assigned to classroom
Job Purpose
Lead Teachers in the Melinda Webb School Early Learning Program are responsible for managing classroom schedules, curriculum implementation, and student supervision during the school day. The Lead Teacher tracks formal and informal data for progress monitoring.
The Lead ELP Teacher holds the Director Certification for Texas Child Care Regulation. The Lead ELP Teacher is responsible for daily operations of the Melinda Webb School in the absence of the Director of Education.
Major Classroom Responsibilities
· Implements educational programs for children ages18 months – 3 years old
· Maintains all required data on students
· Monitors and documents student progress, attendance, and behavior
· Participates in three parent conferences a year
· Develops and adapts lesson plans to individual student needs
· Assumes direct responsibility for students during school hours
· Plans and directs activities for ELP Teaching Assistants
Major Director Responsibilities
· Responsible for the efficient day-to-day operation of The Melinda Webb School
· Responsible for meeting the Texas Minimum Standards for Child Care Regulation
· Reviews student progress, attendance, and behavior
· Assures appropriate record keeping for each student in the Early Learning Program
· Maintains tuition billing and collection
· Supervises and dismisses appropriate salaried and contract staff in the absence of the Director of Education
· Maintains overall supervision of the classroom programs and activities
Work Activities
· Lesson Planning and Data Tracking
o Turns in lessons and notes weekly using formal and informal assessments to monitor progress towards goals listed in the Early Learning Program and Melinda Webb School curriculums
o Keeps adequate data on each student in the areas of cognition, fine and gross motor, early literacy, communication, health and wellbeing, and social emotional development.
o Demonstrates knowledge of each child’s overall development
o With in-house training, demonstrates mastery of all MWS ELP curriculum and assessments
· Parent Communication
o Communicates with parents regarding student behavior, progress in class, and items needed for school
o Contact parents via phone, Brightwheel, or email in the event of a child emergency, illness, other related issue
o Has open communication with parents through email, phone calls, and meetings
o Supports teachers in parents conferences, parent meetings, and other parent interactions as needed
o Communicates changes in scheduling, class placement, and teaching staff with parents in an effective and timely manner
o Reports communicable diseases to families (and childcare licensing representative if applicable) after a potential exposure
o Sends reminders to families regarding policies and procedures as necessary
o Answers parent questions during arrival and dismissal time
· Student Supervision and Daily Needs
o Maintains active watch of students when on duty during class time, lunch, transitions, recess, etc.
o Supervises bathroom needs and provides toileting assistance as needed including, but not limited to, diapering and changing soiled clothes
o Administer minor first aid and CPR when needed
· Professional Responsibilities
o Participates in teacher meetings, all staff meetings, and other meetings as assigned.
o Maintains a Director Certification for Texas Child Care Regulation completes 30 hours of professional development a year
o Collaborates with Teaching Assistants to create a classroom plan and select specific Teacher Assistant duties
· Other Responsibilities
o Coordinates activities of volunteers and substitutes assigned to the classroom
o Attend field trips and other school functions throughout the year
Administrative and Supervisory Responsibilities
o Enforces THI and MWS policies for all MWS staff
o Supervise Teaching Assistants in the Early Learning Program
o Responsible for the efficient operation of The Melinda Webb School during all school year breaks
o Assumes direct responsibility for students and teachers during school and extended day hours (7:00 AM – 6:00 PM)
o Responsible for meeting SACS-CASI certification and Childcare Licensing Standards
o Assures appropriate record keeping for each child in the Early Learning Program
o Parent Communication
· Has open communication with parents through email, phone calls, and meetings
· Hosts Parent Orientation each year in August and in small groups for parents who enroll their child throughout the school year
· Supports teachers in parents conferences, parent meetings, and other parent interactions as needed
· Communicates changes in scheduling, class placement, and teaching staff with parents in an effective and timely manner
· Reports communicable diseases to families (and childcare licensing representative if applicable) after a potential exposure
· Sends reminders to families regarding policies and procedures as necessary
· Answers parent questions during arrival and dismissal time
Physical Demands
Stand three or more hours a day; walk 10,000 steps a day; sit in low chairs and on the floor; hear; speak clearly; able to bend over; reach with hands and arms; able to lift or move 20-pound boxes or furniture; able to lift and carry a 50-pound child; able to control a child with aggressive behaviors; able to actively participate in outdoor events, including in extreme temperatures; Flu and COVID vaccines required, provided by THI at no cost to employees.
Education and Experience Requirements
· CDA, Associates, or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, or related field
· 5 years’ experience in a certified child care center
· 1-2 years of leadership experience preferred
· An understanding of early childhood development
· Philosophical agreement with and commitment to the mission of Texas Hearing Institute
Specific Skills
Organizational skills, classroom management, composure in stressful situations, patience when handling children, diagnostic teaching skills, flexibility during schedule changes and special events
Basic Competencies
Excellent oral and written use of English language, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, comprehensive understanding of early childhood development, internet
