USCGC TANEY SHIP MANAGER

JOB SUMMARY
The Living Classrooms Foundation is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization operated for the benefit of the community at-large, providing hands-on education and job training, with a special emphasis on at-risk youth and groups from diverse backgrounds. Utilizing maritime settings and a I :5 staff to student ratio, the Foundation provides experience-based educational programs emphasizing the applied learning of math, science, language arts, history, economics, and ecology. Key objectives of all Living Classrooms Foundation programs are career development, cooperative learning, community service, elevating self-esteem, and fostering multi-cultural exchange.

The USCGC TANEY Ship Manager is an entry level position reporting to the Executive Director, Historic Ships in Baltimore and is responsible for carrying out the mission and objectives of the President and Board of Directors of the Living Classrooms Foundation. The USCGC TANEY Ship Manager will be engaged in the maintenance and ongoing restoration of the USCGC TANEY and other vessels in the Historic Ships Fleet. The USCGC TANEY Ship Manager will become part of the interpretive program while working on board the vessel. The USCGC TANEY Ship Manager will also, at times be engaged as an instructor working with interns and apprentices.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Direct responsibilities include but may not be limited to the care and maintenance of:

        USCGC TANEY

        Ship's tools and equipment

        Ship’s systems

        Ship's storage areas

        Ship's workshop(s)

        Management of LCF Live-aboard staff program

        Recruitment, supervision and instruction of TANEY Volunteers

 

Coordinated Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

     Working with the HSB Museum Curator of Historic Vessels to ensure that all projects on board TANEY are performed properly and in accordance with the Secretary’s Standards for Historic Preservation.

     Working with the Education and Operations Departments in support of and participating in education and public programming and augmenting the visitor's experience whenever possible.

     Working with the Education Department as instructor and evaluator of apprentices and interns.

     Working with the Education Department in the training and utilization of volunteers where possible.

     Assisting the HSB Team with fundraisers and special events as scheduled.

 

                              

General Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

   Producing quality results and working cohesively as an integral member of the HSB/LCF team.

   Implementation of short, mid, and long-term maintenance programs of the Historic Ships in Baltimore.

   Maintenance of shop areas and equipment

   Safe work ethic must include proper use and implementation of PPE (personal protective equipment)

   Providing safe working conditions for ship's staff apprentices and volunteers on board USCGC TANEY.

   Practicing and exhibiting safe work habits realizing that you are a role model for ship's staff, apprentices and volunteers

   Being an effective co-worker who promotes a positive work ethic and good morale among ship's staff, volunteers and apprentices.

   Being an effective spokesperson for Historic Ships in Baltimore and the Living Classrooms Foundation.

   Such other duties assigned as necessary assigned for the operation and maintenance of the Historic Ships Fleet.

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent, two years of shipwright experience, preferred experience in marine/ship repair environment, must possess basic carpentry skills, be able to utilize hand and power tool equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

USCGC TANEY Ship Manager must be able to do all manner of physical activities including working outdoors in all types of weather conditions.  Must be physically capable of moving through the ships and performing all tasks associated with emergency procedures.
