Dental Director
SUMMARY: Responsible for administering, maintaining and expanding a program of primary/secondary care and preventive dental care. The Dental Director supervises the dental staff. The Dental Director provides dental advice and counsel to the Chief Medical Officer. In addition, the Dental Director diagnoses and treats disease, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gums, and related oral structures by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Examines patient to determine nature of condition.
2. Cleans teeth and provides preventive dental services to patient such as applications of fluoride and sealants to teeth.
3. Caps injured teeth and fills cavities.
4. Places braces on teeth to straighten or align them.
5. Injects painkiller into patient’s gum and extracts diseased teeth.
6. Designs and makes dentures to replace missing or diseased teeth.
7. Educates patient in oral and dental hygiene.
8. Assists in the preparation of an operating budget for the Dental Department and in conjunction with the Chief Financial Officer and the oversees compliance with the Dental Department’s budget.
9. Designs, develops, and implements appropriate Dental Department policies, protocols and procedures which are following the most current accepted professional standards. Technical supervision of Dental Hygienist and Dental Assistant.
10. Administrative supervision of all Dental Clinic staff.
11. Serves on the Extended Leadership team.
12. Collaborates closely with all members of the Agency’s dental staff on clinical issues and measures, including their completeness and accuracy.
13. Participate, where applicable, in various grant application processes.
14. Participate in the progress review process of established grant goals and objectives.
15. Participates in the retention of recruitment of dental staff.
16. Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Doctoral degree in Dental Medicine
Alabama Dental License
Alabama Controlled Substance Licensure
DEA Licensure
Five (5) or more years of Clinical experience as a Dentist
Two (2) or more years of experience supervising a dental clinic and staff
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:
Alabama Dental License, Controlled Substance Licensure from the State of Alabama, and DEA Licensure
SUPERVISORY RESPONISBILITIES:
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

1. Ability to be clinically fluent in Spanish preferred
2. Knowledge of public health principles and practices preferred
3. Administrative, management, PI, and budget development experience preferred
4. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills required
5. Ability to maintain appropriate clinical privileges required, hospital privileges preferred
6. FTCA coverage or private professional malpractice insurance obtainable
7. Joint Commission readiness and knowledge of survey requirements
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience practicing with both pediatric and adult population.
Experience performing basic oral surgery procedures
Experience performing endodontic procedures
Experience working with Dentrix Electronic Dental Record (EDR) and digital radiographs
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must have knowledge of the science of Oral Health
Must have good eyesight
Must have good manual dexterity and a steady hand
Must have the ability to concentrate for long periods of time
Must have the ability to use specialist equipment
Must have strong problem-solving skills
