Director, Venue Operations

We are looking for a Director of Venue Operations who will be responsible for overseeing operations for Save On Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria.


This multi-faceted role will have a number of accountabilities, including but not exclusive to those listed below:

  • Responsible for short- and long-term planning, staffing forecasts and operational review of events and profitability
  • Creates and communicates a vision which aligns the Operations Strategy to GSL’s strategy and becomes the basis for long range venue, equipment, facilities, planning and execution to deliver long term goals
  • Directs, supervises, and schedules all aspects of facility operations including operations staff, engineering; building and grounds; technical services; including accessibility compliance; public safety; security; custodial services, parking departments, etc.
  • Oversees facility operations staff scheduling & hours tracking to maintain a lean and efficient operation
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training, motivating, and managing venue staff
  • Establish and maintain a working standard operating procedure for staff and all aspects of the building operations
  • Set, implement, and update facility rules, regulation policies and procedures
  • Develops and implements operations strategies that improve execution, efficiency and provide additional value in a cost-effective manner
  • Monitors and evaluates revenue and expenditures status on an on-going basis, preparing budget summaries and analysis as required
  • Investigate, analyze, and resolve operational problems, complaints, and emergency repairs in a timely and efficient manner
  • Manage facility operations & maintenance budget, providing regular reporting, backup, projections, and event specific reconciliations as required
  • Day to day management & procurement, including RFQ preparation with a three-quote process, of all facility operations vendors/subcontractors including but not limited to HVAC, plumbing, electrical, cleaning, security, waste/recycling, etc.
  • Acts as the primary contact for the Venue to support relationships with various organizations that utilize the facility; manage community relationships with the City of Victoria, Victoria PD, Island Health and Worksafe BC
  • Oversees all service partners and suppliers
  • Coordinate the operations activities with other building departments and show-related contractors to assure facility readiness and smooth operation of events
  • Responsible for execution of contracts – estimated cost vs. actual cost; review of contracts; supervision of labor and subcontractors; preparation of invoices and collections
  • Establish and maintain high standards of customer service for staff, customers, and vendors
  • Responsible for creating a ‘winning culture’, leading change initiatives and removing barriers to build a world class venue through exemplary leadership practices
  • Proactively communicates with and seeks feedback from all staff; seeks to continuously improve performance and efficiencies
  • Identify and maximize revenue drivers while optimizing the overall guest and client experience
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by executive team


  • Bachelor’s Degree in business administration, facility management or related sports & entertainment field preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a stadium or event venue
  • Proven knowledge and experience in leadership, strategic planning, operations, financial management, and production of large-scale events
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other applications
  • Knowledge of Technical Safety BC and Worksafe BC current policies and procedures
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other applications.
  • Possess valid driver’s license, or have the ability to acquire
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Solutions-oriented with the ability to anticipate problems and implement immediate corrective action
  • Highly organized with excellent project management skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines and work effectively in a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to work flexible and extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
