Tanganyika Wildlife Park Docent Program

Are you passionate about wildlife, conservation, and creating unforgettable guest experiences?

The Docent Program at Tanganyika Wildlife Park is a year-round volunteer opportunity for teens and adults who want to make a meaningful impact while gaining hands-on experience in a dynamic zoological setting.

Whether you’re a student exploring future career paths or a professional looking to give back, our flexible program allows you to get involved in ways that match your interests, strengths, and schedule.

What Do Docents Do?

Depending on age, training, and availability, docents may participate in:

  • Animal Encounter Stations
  • Animal Care support (18+ only and must volunteer once a week)
  • Education and outreach activities
  • Office and behind-the-scenes projects

We aim to place volunteers in areas where they can thrive and grow.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re seeking individuals who are:

  • Positive, self-motivated, and open-minded
  • Flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced environment
  • Reflective and open to constructive feedback
  • Team-oriented and collaborative
  • Strong communicators (a plus — but not all roles require public speaking)

No prior animal experience is required, though it is helpful for certain placements.

Program Requirements

By applying to the Docent Program, you understand and agree that:

  • This is a volunteer position with no monetary compensation
  • You are at least 14 years of age
  • You can commit to a minimum of 40 hours per year
  • You will complete an interview and, if selected, attend required orientation and training
  • You will follow all Tanganyika Wildlife Park policies and safety protocols
  • You will provide your own transportation to and from the Park
  • A $25 program fee is due upon acceptance

Why Become a Docent?

  • Build real-world experience in a zoological environment
  • Develop leadership, communication, and teamwork skills
  • Connect more deeply with wildlife and conservation efforts
  • Form meaningful relationships with fellow volunteers and staff
  • Make a direct impact on guest experiences and community education

As a docent, you help create the WOW moments that inspire guests to care about animals and conservation long after they leave the Park.
