Behaviour Outreach Facilitator - Full Time

Calgary, AB Full-time

Tuesday to Saturday I 37.5  hours per week I Combination of days and evenings

Reporting to the Manager of Behaviour, the Behaviour Outreach Facilitator’s primary role is to facilitate Calgary Humane Society’s educational, training, and community outreach programs. These programs aim to build community awareness around positive reinforcement training methods, animal behaviour concerns, and responsible pet ownership while fostering empathy and compassion for the animals in our community.

Duties:

  • Assist with the implementation of a strategic post-adoption support program to include:
    • Behaviour resources for all species
    • An engagement strategy that keeps adopters connected to Calgary Humane Society
    • Development of behaviour outreach programs and services
  • Coordinate animal behaviour training classes, including:
    • Scheduling contract trainers
    • Booking private consultations
    • Class registration and client relations
    • Ensuring classes are posted, promoted, filled, and effectively staffed
  • Collaborate with the Manager of Behaviour in monitoring revenue goals for training classes and act proactively to meet them
  • Support the Manager of Behaviour in the development of a CHS trainer accreditation program
  • Assist in the creation of new training classes to meet evolving community needs
  • Support the Operations team by informing training plans that can transition into post-adoption support
  • Attend Behaviour Rounds to support Behaviour Operations with tailored training and enrichment plans that increase adoptability and ensure a seamless transition to post-adoption support
  • Participate in behaviour class activities, assisting contract trainers and volunteers with setup, lessons, and takedown
  • Monitor the behaviour helpline, assist clients, and triage inquiries to the appropriate departments or resources
  • Schedule and conduct private cat behaviour consultations
  • Work with the Behaviour Operations team on ongoing review and updates of CHS animal behaviour handouts
  • Attend adoption rounds to help proactively plan post-adoption support for each animal
  • Evaluate the animal intake waitlist and proactively contact clients to assess whether behaviour support may help divert intake.
  • Offer individualized training and management support to help clients resolve concerns and successfully retain their pets where appropriate.
  • Seek opportunities to promote CHS and our programs at community events to strengthen relationships with sponsors, donors, and other key stakeholders
  • Initiate and maintain positive relationships with contract trainers, community training facilities, and other industry partners
  • Provide support and input on the development of department manuals, processes, policies, and procedures
  • Send, compile, analyze, and report feedback from participant and/or community surveys
  • Responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of the onsite training auditorium
  • Act as an ambassador for the society both internally and with external partners and stakeholders
  • Champion CHS values of Compassion, Commitment, Collaboration, and Courage in everyday work
  • Promote a culture of volunteer engagement by building and maintaining positive relationships with volunteers and participating in volunteer recognition (monthly and annual)
  • Provide support to the Animal Care team when required

 

Position Requirements:

  • Completion of or working toward a professional training certification is considered an asset (e.g., KPA, CPDT, IAABC, Pet Professional Guild)
  • Flexibility to work a schedule that includes days, evenings, weekends, and some statutory holidays
  • Intermediate knowledge of animal behaviour
  • Previous professional experience in animal welfare, dog daycare, class coordination, or public relations is an asset
  • Working toward or willing to pursue professional development or certifications in feline/canine behaviour
  • Proven experience delivering effective communication and high-quality customer service
  • Confident public speaker
  • Strong administrative skills; ability to maintain records and produce clear written/verbal reports; intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Strong time management and ability to work under pressure while balancing multiple priorities
  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to work with a diverse range of people
  • Flexible and non-judgmental approach
  • Positive, can-do attitude in challenging situations
  • Collaborative and team-oriented mindset
  • Efficient and effective problem solver
  • Must hold a Class 5 driver’s licence with at least 3 years driving experience and a clean driver’s abstract

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Comfortable and capable of handling a variety of species (e.g., cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, reptiles, rodents)
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions: sitting, standing, reaching, lifting, squatting, bending, walking, and pulling
