Organic Community Gardener (Seasonal May/October)


Hours are TBD; Approximately 32 hours per week for three weeks in the spring (for planting), and a week in the fall for garden cleanup. 20-32 hours weekly from May 1-September 28.


The position is for someone who will grow produce and flowers while supporting and adhering to organic gardening practices. Mostly general garden work; i.e. prepare, plant, weed and harvest garden beds in the Community Organic Garden at the bottom of the mountain.  Being able to follow through and work independently is essential in this position. This position must assist Mountain Air members, most who are beginner gardeners and grow crops for the club’s garden market and restaurants. Excellent customer service skills are required.


Successful completion and maintaining of criminal background check with no felony convictions as recommended by NC Department of Child services.

Basic Red Cross CPR and 1st aid certification or ability to obtain.

Have or obtain NC pesticide applicator’s license or at minimum apply National Organic Program allowed sprays in a manner compliant with all NC required protocols.

High school diploma or GED required; college courses or degree preferred.

Strong work ethic, integrity, dependability, positive attitude and a team player.

Strong motivation to keep the garden and shed clean and looking great at all times.

Be willing and able to learn new gardening skills through continuing education.

Physical ability to work in the garden including during hot weather, with a variety of garden tools, move briskly though-out work environment, lift at least 30 pounds, and work for extended time periods outdoors, in the sun, on your feet. Occasional heavy work required. 


Direct Community Garden plans and work, in adherence to OMRI approved organic gardening practices. 

Excellent customer relation and public relations skills while assisting Mountain Air members, most who are beginner gardeners, in a professional and encouraging manner. Greet members and their guests when they come into the garden area. Give garden tours as needed.

Grow, market, and sell produce at the weekly Garden Market and to the culinary team. 

Practice active listening to all club members and their guests. Ensuring they receive courteous, prompt and professional attention. 

Assist members in planting, caring for, and harvesting their own garden beds, give direction when needed. Often includes caring for garden beds and planting/harvesting while members are away, or before their arrival.

Lead a 6 week, hour-long kids in the garden program, with other adult camp counselor assistance.

Assist director with garden budget requests, research, and management.

Wear name tag; represent the Garden, Recreation Department, and Mountain Air in a professional and courteous manner.
