Senior Negotiating Landman

We are seeking candidates for the position of Senior Negotiating Landman on the Freehold Business Development team. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of Engineers, Geologists and Landmen who are responsible for generating value from our 6 million gross royalty acres and overseeing the leasing and royalty optimization initiatives in Canada.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute a strategy to optimize the value of Freehold’s Canadian land inventory, which involves identifying opportunities, negotiating and drafting land related agreements to support drilling initiatives
  • Work closely with our technical team to identify and quantify value of Freehold’s asset base as the foundation to negotiate lease and royalty agreements with third parties
  • Work closely with Land Administration and Compliance teams to monitor the performance of lease terms and other contractual obligations
  • Maintain awareness of industry activity, trends and regulations across all major oil and gas producing plays in Western Canada
  • Source out strategic consolidation and acquisition opportunities in core royalty areas
  • Develop and foster positive third-party relationships within the oil and gas land community
  • Establish and maintain industry contacts through effective networking
  • Represent Freehold with a high degree of professionalism and integrity

Required Characteristics, Attributes and Skills:

  • Initiative – self starter who can work independently and proactively seek out opportunities
  • Experience working freehold land and royalty structures
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong technical acumen – the ability to leverage a variety of data sources to help identify and prioritize opportunities
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong working knowledge of government regulations and CAPL Procedure documents
  • Excellent organizational skills required to track and report results
  • Strong working knowledge various applications such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), CS Explorer, Spotfire and Geoscout


  • 10+ years’ experience in negotiations and contracts
  • Post secondary degree – Bachelor of Commerce with PLM designation preferred
