The Groundskeeping Manager is responsible for maintaining and improving Foundation campus grounds and related systems in a safe, functional and attractive manner.  The incumbent operates independently to perform most tasks, and maintains decision-making protocol with the Director of Administration with regard to landscape and facilities duties.  The position requires 35-40 hours per week March – November and 30-35 hours per week December – February.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Perform regular general maintenance of campus grounds
    1. Mow, edge and fertilize lawns
    2. Weed and mulch landscapes
    3. Trim hedges, shrubs and small trees
    4. Remove dead, damaged or unwanted small trees and coordinate larger jobs with contractor
    5. Planting flowers, trees and shrubs
    6. Water lawns, landscapes and gardens
    7. Collection and disposal of site debris
  1. Maintain interior/exterior facilities and systems as needed
    1. Assist Director of Administration with interior maintenance and relevant assignments as needed
    2. Ensure proper operation of site water drainage systems
    3. Perform necessary maintenance of site roadways, walkways, paths, porches, decking
    4. Coordinate with appropriate staff to ensure campus preparation for site events and rentals
    5. Coordinate maintenance and warranty service with external vendors as appropriate
    6. Coordinate and share responsibility of snow removal with contractor
    7. Serve as primary contact for site fire and intrusion alarms
    8. Supplement work of contracted cleaning staff as needed
  1. Participate in regular site walks to ensure maintenance is being completed in a timely and complete fashion
  2. Maintain comprehensive site maintenance task list
  3. Manage inventory of tools and equipment required for site maintenance
  4. Lead small teams of staff and volunteers to perform above tasks as appropriate
  5. Support program staff with special projects relevant to the campus grounds
  6. Serve as primary Foundation contact for dealing with outside contractors working on landscape maintenance
  7. Source and obtain needed equipment, supplies and tools
  8. Work with supervisor on budgets/approvals for purchases and investments
  9. Maintain campus signage
  10. Explore opportunities to expand campus usage

Qualifications:

Requirements

  • Associates degree or equivalent experience
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent time-management skills and ability to carry out multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Significant knowledge of and experience in performing general landscape maintenance
  • Able to work with herbicides and chemicals used for invasive plant removal
  • Able to maintain landscaping tools and equipment and work with external vendors when more extensive maintenance and repairs are required
  • Proficiency in computer systems
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good people skills and the ability to lead small teams of staff and volunteers, model appropriate behavior among colleagues and in the community, and interact effectively with external constituents, internal management and Foundation staff in general
  • Work well in challenging conditions and with a diverse population
  • Ability to work non-standard weekday hours as circumstances warrant, including some weekend and holiday work
  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record
  • Ability to drive pickup truck and trailer
  • Knowledgeable of basic OSHA safety regulations

 Preferences

  • Knowledge of meadow systems and similar plantings
  • Knowledge of local and invasive plant species and their management
  • Handyman skills
