Animal Care Attendant 

35 hours per week, 9 week term

Reporting to the Manager of Animal Care, CHS Animal Care Attendants are responsible for providing exemplary care and comfort to all of our animals on a daily basis. The team also works collaboratively with other departments to achieve clean and sanitary conditions and satisfy the needs of all animals in our care.

Duties:

  • Maintain clean and sanitary conditions in all areas where animals are housed and provide humane, fair, and equal treatment of all animals in the care of CHS.
  • Daily cleaning, spot cleaning, and disinfecting of assigned kennel areas per cleaning guidelines and protocols.
  • Ensure that all equipment and supplies are neatly organized and put away at all times and that all work areas are kept neat and orderly.
  • Provide proper food amounts and types, water, proper bedding, litter areas, hiding/perching areas, behavior enrichment, proper light, humidity and temperature, to all animals per the animal feeding and care guidelines.
  •  Observe animals for signs of disease, injury, illness, or behavioral problems and report concerns to appropriate department(s).
  • Assist with the safe movement of animals through the shelter and maintain proper records including animal monitoring cards, computer records, and identification as required.
  • Collaborate with operational departments to ensure successful outcomes of animals.
  • Support and participate in daily animal behaviour enrichment programs, documenting activities as required.
  • In consultation with the Animal Behaviour and Enrichment Facilitators, work to implement training plans for dogs in care.
  • Observe and document animal behaviour and provide feedback and consultation on best path forward.
  •  Occasionally assist in other areas and departments on an as-needed basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Skills will be cultivated through hands-on, on-the-job training with a variety of animals. To establish a foundational understanding, videos covering topics such as animal body language, safe animal handling, and PPE usage will be provided. These skills will be further honed through practical experience and can be applied across different departments at CHS. By shadowing other teams, youth will expand their knowledge of related fields, including veterinary care and animal behavior. This experience will give them insight into an animal’s journey through the shelter and the efforts required to ensure its safety and well-being before adoption. Through working with animal care, youth will develop valuable skills that are transferable to various fields, from veterinary medicine to zoology. The experiences gained at Calgary Humane Society will serve as a solid foundation for future study or career growth.

Summer Job Requirements: 

Calgary Humane Society summer jobs are subsidized through the Canada Summer Jobs program which offers wage subsidies to support employers to create quality summer work experiences for youth aged 15 to 30 years.

To be eligible for this position under the Canada Summer Jobs Program, candidates must meet the position requirements as well as be:

  • between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • International students are not eligible.

Position Requirements: 

  • Minimum high school diploma
  • Minimum of one year of professional or volunteer work experience
  • Ability to commit to the full duration of the term of the position
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to approach sensitive and emotional situations using a flexible, compassionate, and non-judgmental approach
  • Outgoing, friendly, and relationship focused to foster and enhance connections with individuals and organizations within our community
  • Comfortable public speaking
  • Customer service experience preferred
  • Volunteer experience with a not-for-profit organization preferred
  • Driver’s License preferred
  • Flexibility of working hours and shifts outside of normal business hours including weekends, occasional evenings, and overtime
  • Demonstrated resiliency and ability to maintain positive and professional in a fast-paced environment 
  • Genuine interest in the welfare of animals and people and values congruent with the organization
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Dependable, reliable, and dedicated to completing assigned tasks and meeting deadlines while also demonstrating adaptability to changing priorities and work assignments
  • Self-motivated with strong problem-solving and teamwork skills
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Successful candidate will be required to complete a police information check at their own expense to be arranged by CHS
  • Physically capable of, and comfortable handling a variety of species including but not limited to cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, reptiles, and small critters

Hourly Rate:

  • $17.00 + 6% Vacation Pay
