The Arab-American Family Support Center (AAFSC) is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization established in 1994 to provide culturally and linguistically competent, trauma-informed social services. Our mission is to empower immigrants and refugees with the tools they need to successfully acclimate to the world around them and become active participants in their communities. While our doors are open to all, with 36 languages represented across staff, AAFSC has developed cultural and linguistic expertise serving members of NYC’s Arab, Middle Eastern, North African, Muslim, and South Asian (AMENAMSA) immigrant and refugee communities.


AAFSC works across four key priority areas – Promote, Prevent, Get Ready, and Communicate – in order to achieve our ultimate goal of strengthening families. We promote mental and physical well-being and community power. We ensure families are knowledgeable about their rights and equipped to participate in civic society with confidence and security. We strengthen families, prevent child abuse, and work to end domestic and gender-based violence. We provide the tools for learners of every age to succeed. Finally, we uplift the voices and needs of under-represented communities and champion gender, racial, restorative, and immigrant justice.



The Human Resources (HR) Specialist will provide a range of core HR services as the primary point person for the Human Resources department. In partnership with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Deputy Director of Administration, the HR Specialist will oversee and administer programs focused on recruiting and onboarding, talent management, compliance, benefits management, performance development, employee and manager coaching, and policy updates.


A successful person in this role will be organized, have high attention to detail and will have the capacity to thrive under pressure while working on multiple projects. This person must be able to exercise discretion and a high degree of confidentiality at all times. A commitment to immigrant, refugee and low-income communities is essential for success in this role.



Talent Strategy & Recruitment:

·       Partner with the leadership team to understand and execute the organization’s human resource and talent strategy particularly as it relates to current and future talent needs, recruiting, retention, and succession planning.

·       Responsible for the talent acquisition process, which includes recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of qualified job applicants.

·       Collaborate with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings.

·       In collaboration with the hiring managers, develop position descriptions that reflect the responsibilities of the positions, qualifications required, and approaches that will attract a robust pool of diverse qualified candidates.


Culture Building & Engagement:

·       Partner with team leads and agency leadership to engage staff in fostering the culture AAFSC aspires to – fully aligned with the values, including work on diversity, equity and inclusion.

·       Build on analysis of various data sources (e.g., employee survey, 360 feedback, working groups and other input and feedback) and lead the discussion with the senior management team on AAFSC’s strategic plan for human resources.


Compliance & Benefits:

·       Oversee employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations.

·       Serve as the HR point person for staff when complex, specialized, and sensitive questions and issues arise; may be required to administer and execute routine tasks in delicate circumstances such as providing reasonable accommodations, investigating allegations of wrongdoing, and terminations.

·       Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, workplace safety & health laws, and all applicable regulations, and recommended best practices.

·       Review policies and practices to maintain compliance and recommend updates to policies and practices.

·       Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.

·       Analyze trends in compensation and benefits; research and propose competitive base and incentive pay programs to ensure the organization attracts and retains top talent.

·       Manage and oversee the entire benefits process for all AAFSC employees, including online open enrollment.

·       Maintain electronic human resources files for all employees.

·       Prepare files for audits, ensuring that all applicable information is included.

·       Performs other duties as assigned.


On-Boarding, Training & Performance Management:

·       Play a key role in the onboarding process for all new hires at AAFSC, including serving as the first point of contact for all new hires at the agency.

·       In partnership with the Training & Technical Assistance unit, support directors in identifying the development needs of the teams/units they lead, develop a plan and research resources to implement the plan, customize for the team it serves, and provide ongoing support.

·       Support the individual professional development of all staff at AAFSC.

·       Identify external consultants to support the work – organization-wide, with teams/units, and with individual employees. Review options and approaches with senior management and/or the individual director, develop the scope of work, and monitor for ongoing performance against agreed-upon deliverables.


Ambassador & Champion

·       Every AAFSC team member serves as an ambassador of the organization and champion of AAFSC’s mission, vision, and values. This includes the following:

o   Cultivate relationships on behalf of and in support of the organization in partnership with Senior Leadership and the Resource Development team. This includes being sensitive to and aware of others, providing every client, partner and participant with high-quality service, professional communication, and follow through, and always keeping Senior Leadership and the Resource Development team aware of any opportunities, challenges, or updates.

o   All team members are expected to support the Resource Development team with any requests in a timely manner, including, but not limited to: grant applications, reports, attendance at meetings, hearings, or other events, and sharing of AAFSC social media, flyers, and other externally-facing communications.

o   Demonstrate a willingness to respond to evolving community needs, including, but not limited to, making referrals in light of community needs, supporting with the development of and implementation of new initiatives or programming, and raising awareness of new or evolving needs.

o   Always act with integrity, positivity, dedication, and professionalism within the office and externally. This includes, but is not limited to, email communication, verbal communication, communication with colleagues and peers, communication with clients, or communication with external partners or agencies.


Other duties and responsibilities

·       Participate in AAFSC meetings and internal and external trainings.

·       Remain updated on human resources & operations knowledge by attending educational workshops, joining professional associations, building networks with fellow professionals and reviewing of industry publications.

·       Perform other duties assigned by President & CEO and COO.



·       Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, or related field required.

·       A minimum of three years of human resource & operations management experience preferred.

·       SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP highly desired.

·       Strong writing and communication skills required.

·       Excellent organizational, time-management, follow-up, and administrative skills with attention to detail.

·       Proven office management, administrative or assistant experience.

·       Demonstrated knowledge of office management responsibilities, systems and procedures.

·       Strong proficiency in MS Office.

·       Knowledge of accounting, data and administrative management practices and procedures.

·       Knowledge of clerical practices and procedures.

·       Knowledge of business and management principles.

·       Self-starter with the ability to work independently, and as a part of a team, in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment.

·       Demonstrated knowledge of HR responsibilities, systems and procedures.

·       Must be able to exercise discretion and confidentiality at all times.

·       Job contingent on pre-employment background check and fingerprint clearance.

·       U.S. Work Authorization is required.
