30 hours per week, 9 week term
Reporting to the Manager of Behaviour, the Behaviour Outreach Assistant's primary role will be to assist Calgary Humane Society’s animal educational, training, and community outreach programs. The purpose of these programs is to build community awareness around positive reinforcement training methods, animal behaviour concerns and to build strong relationships within the Calgary community in order to educate in the areas of responsible pet ownership, the humane treatment of animals, empathy, and compassion for the animals in our community.
Upon successful completion of this placement, there is opportunity for the individual to stay on as a contract staff member.
Duties:
- Participate in behaviour class activities, assisting the contract trainers and volunteers with set up, class lessons, and take down
- Maintaining program paperwork, materials and supplies
- Help monitor the Animal Behaviour Help phone lines for general inquiries, assist clients and triage various calls to the appropriate department or resource.
- Work with the Manager and Behaviour Outreach Coordinator to implement a strategic post adoption support program, including; Behaviour resources for all species, an engagement strategy that keeps adopters connected to the cause, and the development and maintenance of behaviour outreach programs, curriculums, materials, supplies, and services
- Help coordinate animal behaviour training classes including the scheduling of contract trainers, booking private consultations, class registration, and client relations
- Help organize private cat behaviour consults
- Work with the Behaviour Operations team in the ongoing review and updates of CHS animal behaviour handouts
- Participate in the planning, execution, and attendance at offsite community events using the CHS mobile adoption unit
- Assist the Manager with the development of department manuals, processes, policies, and procedures as assigned
- Responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of onsite training auditorium
- Assist in other areas of the shelter on an as-needed basis including the feeding, cleaning, and enrichment of shelter animals
- Other duties as assigned
Summer Job Requirements:
Calgary Humane Society summer jobs are subsidized through the Canada Summer Jobs program which offers wage subsidies to support employers to create quality summer work experiences for youth aged 15 to 30 years.
To be eligible for this position under the Canada Summer Jobs Program, candidates must meet the position requirements as well as be:
- between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;

Position Requirements:
- Minimum high school diploma
- Intermediate level of knowledge on the topic of animal behaviour
- Professional experience working in a related field such as animal welfare, doggie daycare, class coordinator or public relations considered an asset
- Working towards or willing to work towards feline or canine behaviour professional development or certifications
- Proven positive experience working with people and delivering effective and relative communication skills and customer service
- Confident and comfortable with public speaking
- Ability to commit to the full duration of the term of the position
- Flexibility of working hours and shifts outside of normal business hours including weekends, occasional evenings, and overtime
- Demonstrated resiliency and ability to maintain positive and professional in a fast-paced environment
- Genuine interest in the welfare of animals and people and values congruent with the organization
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Dependable, reliable, and dedicated to completing assigned tasks and meeting deadlines while also demonstrating adaptability to changing priorities and work assignments
- Self-motivated with strong problem-solving and teamwork skills
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
- Successful candidate will be required to complete a police information check at their own expense to be arranged by CHS
- Physically capable of, and comfortable handling a variety of species including but not limited to cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, reptiles, and small critters
Hourly Rate:
- $17.00 + 6% Vacation Pay
