As the Communications Coordinator at Ability Matters, you’ll drive our communication strategy, ensuring clarity and creativity in every interaction. In this key role, you’ll promote our mission, shape our public image, and build meaningful community partnerships. You’ll manage everything from engaging digital content to newsletters and press releases, aligning all efforts with our goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Strategic Communications:

  • Develop and implement strategic communication plans that align with Ability Matters’s mission, values, and goals.

  • Collaborate with leadership and departments to ensure consistency and cohesion across all communications channels.

Internal & External Communications:
  • Maintain clear and effective communication between all departments within the organization to ensure seamless collaboration.

  • Act as the primary point of contact for external communications, including stakeholders, partners, and media outlets.

Digital Communications & Content Management:
  • Oversee all digital communication efforts, including managing social media platforms, the organization’s website, and email marketing campaigns.

  • Create, curate, and manage engaging content for various digital platforms to promote Ability Matters' work and success stories.

Public Relations & Media Engagement:
  • Prepare and distribute press releases, media advisories, and other PR materials to enhance the organization's public image.

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with local media, influencers, and community leaders to promote positive coverage of Ability Matters.

Monthly Newsletters & Publications:
  • Design and distribute monthly internal and external newsletters to keep staff, stakeholders, and partners informed and engaged.

  • Manage and edit other written communications and reports as needed.

Community Engagement & Partnerships:
  • Foster relationships with community organizations, businesses, and government agencies to strengthen partnerships that support Ability Matters’ mission.

  • Represent Ability Matters at community events, conferences, and networking opportunities.

Brand Management:
  • Ensure all communications reflect and promote the Ability Matters brand identity and values.

  • Provide consistent messaging across all channels to maintain a strong and cohesive public image.

Provide Direct Service:
  • Provide direct service to Individuals with autism and other neurological disabilities 2.5 days a week in order to learn and understand the meaning of Ability Matters. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.

  • 2+ years of experience in a communications role, preferably within a nonprofit, social services, or advocacy organization.

  • Proven experience in digital communications, including social media management, email marketing, and content creation.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to tailor messages for diverse audiences.

  • Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with media outlets and community organizations.

  • Knowledge of public relations best practices, with experience writing press releases and media advisories.

  • Experience with graphic design software, website management, and email marketing platforms is a plus.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.

Physical Requirements:

Frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, equipment and/or material may be required. Other physical activities may be required. 

  • Prolonged periods standing and walking within the community and other activities. 

  • Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at a time.

  • Must be able to assist consumers who have physical difficulties.

  • Must be able to kneel, sit, stand, crawl, push, and pull to assist consumers throughout the day.
