Purpose of Position

At the direction of the Deputy Director, this position will support the implementation of policy and research initiatives and oversee daily programmatic operations of the Race and Democracy Program. This support will include the race landscape project, as well as a significant new 3-year project looking at new research in economics, neuroscience and other fields regarding a policy agenda for thriving communities and another project on improving the craft of organizing and social change. The Program Manager will oversee multiple program research activities including research and writing, development of fundraising proposals, and planning convenings. In addition, the program manager will evaluate, guide, and coordinate program activities to ensure compliance with organizational guidelines.

The Program Manager will make sure that all project activities are aligned with defined outcomes. The Program Manager will also advise the Deputy Director regarding program effectiveness and progress; manage fellows connected to the program; troubleshoot problems related to projects’ implementation; convene meetings with stakeholders to define and resolve issues; assist with project evaluation and reporting; and support research projects and methodologies.

This is a non-management, unionized, team leader role.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • The program manager’s main responsibilities include:
  • Oversee the design, planning and implementation of policy and research initiatives.
  • Edit and write memos, strategy briefs, blog posts, and other policy-related documents.
  • Track and manage project deliverables to ensure on-time delivery and budget.
  • Plan meetings and coordinate events for internal and external audiences
  • Engage and collaborate with national, state and local partners, including among others, community organizations, academic institutions, direct service organizations, think tanks, professional associations, government officials, and media.
  • Gather and help produce information that will be useful at the outset of the project.
  • Oversee logistics and operations for program events including securing space, hotels, meals, related communications, materials, A/V, last-minute tech needs, etc.
  • Laterally manage team members to complete logistics and programming tasks for projects
  • Manage fellows and lead project check-in calls.
  • Create and manage information sharing systems and processes to ensure seamless communication and execution of projects (e.g., DropBox, Trello, Slack, Google Drive, Outlook etc.).
  • Synthesize key feedback and information from fellows, managers, and others (quantitative and qualitative).

  • Master's degree in social sciences or public policy
  • Advanced graduate students in social sciences or public policy, or recent graduates with a Ph.D. or J.D., preferred.
  • 3+ years leading large projects in a Think Tank, academic, government or like non-profit

Experience Requirements:

  • Applicants should be advanced graduate students in the social sciences or public policy, or recent graduates with a Ph.D. or J.D. In addition, applicants must have:
  • Strong grounding in the research and policy debates surrounding economic inequality, racial justice, and the legal system.
  • Excellent analytic and research skills, including: in-depth policy analysis; ability to shape arguments for complex policy proposals; ability to synthesize findings from technical research literatures across multiple social science and legal disciplines; and ability to manipulate and analyze web-based data.
  • Experience working with grassroots advocates and knowledge of the economic justice organizing landscape.
  • Excellent writing skills, for both academic and policy audiences
  • Strong oral communication skills and ability to make public presentations
