RESPONSIBILITIES

The MakerSpace Coordinator plays a vital role in our organization, serving as a catalyst for creativity, innovation, and hands-on learning within our YWCA Hamilton community. With a strong commitment to education and a passion for fostering a culture of making, the MakerSpace Coordinator is responsible for creating a dynamic and inclusive environment where individuals of all ages can explore, design, and bring their ideas to life. By coordinating the MakerSpace, developing engaging educational programs, and nurturing community partnerships, this role empowers learners and makers to unleash their potential, discover new skills, and contribute to the growth and vibrancy of our educational ecosystem. 

The MakerSpace Coordinator also leads community engagement efforts by developing and delivering accessible workshops and learning opportunities that respond to community interests and needs. This includes outreach, promotion, and relationship-building to increase participation and ensure the MakerSpace remains welcoming, inclusive, and responsive. Thee MakerSpace Coordinator not only facilitates the use of cutting-edge technology and tools but also instills a sense of curiosity, collaboration, and confidence in all who enter the MakerSpace, ultimately shaping the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:  

·        Oversee day-to-day MakerSpace operations, ensuring the space is clean, well-maintained, and equipment is functioning properly;

·        Lead community engagement and outreach to increase awareness, participation, and equitable access to MakerSpace programming;

·        Design, develop, and deliver a schedule of workshops, trainings, and hands-on learning opportunities for diverse community audiences (e.g., youth, adults, newcomers, partners);

·        Collaborate with educators and internal teams to develop and deliver MakerSpace programs aligned with curriculum standards and organizational priorities;

·        Promote workshops and MakerSpace opportunities in collaboration with internal teams and community partners (e.g., events, information sessions, outreach activities);

·        Build and maintain meaningful internal and external relationships and partnerships, including with local schools, organizations, and businesses, to support MakerSpace engagement;

·        Organize and participate in community events to showcase MakerSpace offerings;

·        Provide technical assistance, instruction, and guidance to MakerSpace users;

·        Develop, implement, and enforce safety procedures and guidelines for MakerSpace users;

·        Troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate repairs and maintenance as required;

·        Manage MakerSpace inventory, order supplies, and maintain records of equipment use;

·        Support budget planning and monitor expenses to ensure cost-effective operations;

·        Evaluate MakerSpace programming by collecting feedback and participation data and using findings to improve and expand offerings;

·        Maintain accurate records of MakerSpace activities, usage, participation, and expenditures in accordance with YWCA Hamilton policies and confidentiality/privacy requirements;

·        Prepare regular reports and updates for department leadership and/or stakeholders;

·        Ensure program policies and procedures are current, reflect best practices, and recommend improvements as needed; 

·        Works safely, reports all workplace hazards and follows all YWCA Hamilton Health and Safety policies and procedures;

·        Understands emerging trends, leading practices, industry professional standards;

·        Stay current on emerging trends, leading practices, and relevant industry/professional standards;

·        Support YWCA Hamilton’s mission, vision, and values;

·        Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

·        Works 37.5 hours work week; 

·        Work Schedule includes evenings and weekends as needed to deliver workshops, host events, and support community programming.


QUALIFICATIONS

·        2 years’ college or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience or equivalent;

·        Minimum of 2 years of experience in a MakerSpace, Fab Lab, or similar environment;

·        Strong background in project-based learning or STEM/STEAM education;

·        Experience with educational program development and management;

·        Proficiency with a variety of tools and equipment commonly found in MakerSpaces is considered an asset (e.g., 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, sewing machines);

·        Knowledge of software tools relevant to MakerSpace operations, such as CAD, 3D modeling and Design software is considered an asset;

·        Familiarity with safety protocols and best practices in a MakerSpace;

·        Must have skills using Microsoft 365 tools;

·        Ability to engage with educators, and community members effectively;

·        Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks;

·        Detail-oriented with a commitment to maintaining a clean and safe MakerSpace environment;

·        Collaborative mindset with the ability to work with colleagues and cross-functional teams;

·        Strong time management and project management skills;

·        Comfortable working in fast paced environment;

·        Excellent written and verbal communication skills including facilitation;

·        Coaching and solution focused mindset with superior client service skills; 

·        Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and also work effectively in a team; 

·        Must have current Standard First Aid and CPR C certificate or willingness to obtain at own cost;

·        Must provide a current Vulnerable Sector Police check or willingness to obtain at own cost;

·        Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed; 

·        Able to work from a feminist, anti-racist/anti-oppressive perspective for operations and strategic planning and apply an intersectional, gender lens to entrepreneurship;

·        Bilingual English/French or other languages an asset.
