POSITION BACKGROUND:

The Mechanical Engineering Technologist (M.E.T.) is responsible for providing technical support in the development, design, and documentation of equipment and components to the specifications provided by Ketek and its clients. This role involves developing mechanical concepts, preparing detailed models and drawings, assisting with engineering calculations, supporting fabrication teams on the shop floor, and coordinating with internal and external engineering resources. The M.E.T. ensures that designs meet project specifications, follow safe work practices, and comply with Ketek’s ISO 9001 Quality Management System.

CORE DUTIES:

Project Design and Research

  • Collaborate with Shop Manager, Shop Foreman, Project Teams and clients to design, review, and develop sketches, 3D Models, drawings and associated calculations to suit required scope
  • Generate drawings, using 2D & 3D drafting software, with required dimensions and details, for fabrication, R&D and bid/quote purposes

Daily Operations

  • Prepare and manage all mechanical drawings, models, and technical documentation as required by Ketek and its clients.
  • Verify that all designs meet mechanical engineering principles, fabrication capabilities, Ketek/client standards, and ISO 9001 requirements.
  • Work directly with fabrication staff to troubleshoot design challenges, clarify documentation, and ensure manufacturability.
  • Coordinate with external engineers or vendors for structural/mechanical engineering stamps, specialty processes, or outsourced manufacturing steps.
  • Maintain accurate electronic filing, revision control, and documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure all revisions follow Ketek and client approval processes.

Other duties

  • Work closely with the Manufacturing Manager to evaluate and improve fabrication processes, jigs, fixtures, and shop efficiency.
  • Conduct site visits to measure, document, and assess existing equipment and field installations.
  • Complete all required safety training and adhere to Ketek safety procedures, policies, and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
  • Represent Ketek in a professional manner consistent with corporate values, vision, and mission.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

Required

  • Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma or equivalent training.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with understanding of design-for-fabrication, welding processes, steel manufacturing methods, and prototyping workflows.
  • Proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD or similar).
  • Fluent in the English language (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Strong visualization, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, shifting priorities, and tight deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain accurate documentation.
  • Capable of working independently or as part of a collaborative team within a fabrication environment.

Preferred

  • Intermediate MS Office Skills (Excel, Word)
  • Experience and/or knowledge of the oilfield and manufacturing industry
  • Experience and/or knowledge of incinerators and steel skids
  • Experience with TEKLA modeling software
  • Experience with AutoCAD software

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand/sit, talk/hear, use hands/fingers to operate a computer and telephone, stoop, and kneel
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and exposure to computer screens
  • Light to moderate lifting (up to 20lbs) may be required

Work Environment

  • Office environment (80%), field environment (10%), and shop/yard environment (10%)
  • May be required to work weekends and outside of regular office hours
  • May be required to visit remote customer sites/facilities
  • Exposure to fabrication shop environment and associated risks, loud noises, arc flash from welding processes etc. which requires proper use of PPE
