Part-Time Ceramics Studio Technician & Teaching Artist

Reports to: Senior Manager, Visual Arts

Position Overview

ArtsQuest is currently seeking an experienced ceramics artist to oversee and manage the Ceramics Studio in the Banana Factory Arts Center. This position will provide a quality and supportive learning environment for a range of skill levels and cultivate a community of learners.  This position oversees the technical and operational aspects of the Art Center’s Ceramics Studio, including day-to-day studio operations, firings, and materials management for ceramics and sculpture classes and studio members. Builds and maintains effective relationships with students, studio members and faculty to gain their respect and trust. Utilizes strong communication skills to ensure the positive perception of ArtsQuest and the Banana Factory Arts Center. Works directly with the Visual Arts staff to ensure an organized, cohesive working environment.

Studio Managerial duties beginning September 2018. Periodic classes and workshops will also be a possible teaching opportunity.


  • Load and unload kilns, fire kilns (electric, temperature, and computerized)
  • Train students in the use of studio equipment and studio safety
  • Track, order, and maintain inventory, budget for supplies
  • Maintain a clean, orderly and safe studio, including consideration of environmental health and safety, oversight of safe handling and disposal of studio materials
  • Maintain a strong sense of community and open dialogue with students and teaching artists
  • Host open ceramics studio; 1 -2 times per week
  • Continual improvement of knowledge of ceramic materials, studio organization, and management
  • Problem solving and communication in the ceramics studio with teaching artists and students
  • Perform general studio maintenance and engineer solutions
  • Work with Visual Arts team to develop ceramic studio course offerings

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • BFA/BA from an accredited college/university or demonstrated success as a teaching artist
  • Prior teaching experience in an educational setting or informal learning environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency in his/her field, including experience loading and maintaining electric kilns
  • Knowledge of various techniques and processes, including glaze materials, proper mixing (clay and glazes) protocols and hazards
  • Ability to work with a wide range of skill levels, personalities, and backgrounds and modify teaching strategies to optimize learning
  • Lift at least 30 pounds, occasionally up to 50 pounds, bend over repeatedly (kiln loading)
  • Wear a dust respirator and be properly fitted with half mask respirator
  • Lift from ground to above shoulder
  • Bend, sit, push, pull, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity
  • Good time management and organizational skills

Pay Rate:

A pay rate has been established and will be discussed with qualified candidates.

FLSA Status:  PT Hourly
