Purpose of Position
The Deputy Director, Education, Jobs and Worker Power will serve as a key member of the Education, Jobs, and Worker Power team. The Deputy Director will partner with the Managing Director of Research and Policy to develop Roosevelt’s strategy for engaging in and managing research and policy analysis on postsecondary education, job training, the labor market, and worker power. The Deputy Director will help shape existing projects to ensure timely and successful execution of programmatic activities by researching and writing papers, briefs, and other content; managing research and writing by fellows; and collaborating with Roosevelt’s communications, advocacy, and development teams.
This position will combine strategy, research, and writing: the Deputy Director will be responsible for co-creating project goals and measures of success, and for ensuring we deliver on those goals. The Deputy Director will manage staff and consultants on a project basis as well as a limited number of direct reports. While this position has the flexibility to serve as a remote employee, the Deputy Director is expected to attend required meetings and phone calls during work hours, and travel for internal and external meetings.
The position will report to the Managing Director of Research and Policy.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Project Strategy and Management:
- Manage the execution of the 2021 workforce training policy memos plan.
- Collaborate with Roosevelt staff (including research, external relations teams) to develop clear project goals and plans for future work.
- Manage external fellows, research associates, and other contracts to develop written products and ensure timely delivery.
- Partner with the development team to articulate these plans, including outcomes and deliverables, for proposals to support project/topic area work, and to track and report out on funder deliverables.
Writing and Research:
- Author or co-author strategic policy reports, research papers, op-eds, articles, presentations, etc.
- Research will often include engaging with partners and outside experts.
- Collaborate with the advocacy and communications team to develop and execute strategies to amplify research and policy proposals in the press and among decision-makers.
- Partner with the Roosevelt Institute’s advocacy, communications, and development teams to represent the organization’s topic area work with policymakers, press, and funders where appropriate. This may include organizing and/or leading meetings or convenings with these audiences, depending on agreed-upon strategy and opportunities.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in the nonprofit field or other applicable work, which may include an advanced degree.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Ability to build strong relationships with external and internal partners.
- Proven experience managing, prioritizing, and meeting multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Highly efficient in time management and able to meet deadlines under pressure.
- Ability to collect, synthesize, and process information quickly and with accuracy.
- Highly organized, with outstanding attention to detail.
- Passion for the Roosevelt Institute’s work and mission.
