Humane Education Facilitator
Reporting to the Manager of Humane Education, the Facilitator’s primary role will be to facilitate Calgary Humane Society’s Humane Education programs for students in kindergarten to Grade 12. The purposes of these programs are to build community awareness, to educate in the areas of responsible pet ownership, the humane treatment of animals, empathy, compassion for the animals in our community, and the link between violence towards animals and bullying in people. Our Humane Education Programs work to educate children, youth and adults about animal welfare as well as ways to get involved with Calgary Humane Society. This role will work collaboratively with all departments at the society, to provide excellent customer service and build and maintain strong relationships with members of the community and Calgary educators/classrooms, by promoting the mission and values of Calgary Humane Society.
Rotation:
Tuesday – Saturday, 9 – 5pm and 11 – 7pm
Salary:
$33,696 per year, negotiable based on experience
Duties:
- Implement strategic educational programming that promotes awareness of Calgary Humane Society’s mission and vision while aligning with the Alberta Program of Studies and Curriculum.
- Facilitate educational programs including field trips, classroom presentations and school tours for Calgary students and classrooms both at the shelter and in the community.
- Lead shelter tours and deliver presentations to community groups of all ages including clubs, scouts, social clubs and senior’s groups.
- Help develop and maintain department presentations, keeping information up to date and engaging for students.
- Create new educational opportunities for students in kindergarten to Grade 12, to teach about animal welfare, proper pet care, one health and the five freedoms of animal welfare.
- Through professional correspondence, support with the booking, registration and scheduling of all department programs and activities.
- Initiate and maintain positive relationships with educational institutions and other community partners.
- Maintain supplies and inventory for education programs used in Field Trips and Presentations.
- Assist in the organization, scheduling and implementation of camps, clubs, birthday parties, community group tours and other Household Programs.
- Collaborate with other members of the Humane Education team to plan and schedule Summer Camps and create training resources for Camp Counsellors and volunteers.
- Seek opportunities to promote Calgary Humane Society and Humane Education programs at community events to strengthen relationships with sponsors, donors, and other key stakeholders.
- Represent Calgary Humane Society at community events and strive to build positive relationships between the Society and members of the public.
- Assist the Manager with the development of department manuals, processes, and policies as assigned.
- Assist other departments such as Animal Care, Reception, and Community Outreach as needed or directed by the Manager of Humane Education.
- Provide guidance to Camp Leaders, Practicum Students, Volunteers and other team members assisting Humane Education.
- Responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of Calgary Humane Society’s Learning Center.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
- Genuine concern for the welfare of animals
- Flexibility to work a rotating schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and some statutory holidays
- Diploma or Degree in Education or related field considered an asset
- Ability to motivate, inspire, and provide leadership, guidance, and feedback to all age groups
- Proven positive experience working with youth and delivering effective and relative communication skills
- Confident and comfortable with public speaking
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Current CPR/First Aid Certification required
- Strong time management skills and ability to work well under pressure while balancing multiple priorities
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with a diverse range of people
- Flexible and non-judgmental approach to people and work
- Ability to maintain a positive can-do attitude even during difficult circumstances
- A collaborative and team focused mindset
- Ability to deal with information in a confidential manner and respond with sensitivity to the opinions of others

- Strong administration skills; ability to maintain records and produce clear written and verbal reports
- Successful candidate will be required to provide an enhanced police information check at their own expense to be arranged by CHS
- Valid Class 5 drivers with a clean driver abstract
