ROLE OVERVIEW:  

The Skilled Trades Trainee position is offered through a specialized training stream under Civiconnect’s Youth Skills Studio (YSS) program. This program provides participants with the essential technical and soft skills that are needed to start a career in skilled trades. This hands-on training program is designed for individuals with little to no prior experience. 

Participants will work directly with a small business while receiving on-the-job training from industry professionals. Through a combination of structured workshops and hands-on learning, this program serves as a steppingstone for individuals looking to launch a career in skilled trades.  

Depending on the placement, participants will gain experience in a skilled trade such as construction, carpentry, machining, electrical, manufacturing, or other trade-related fields 

WAGE: $22 per hour  

HOURS OF WORK: 3Hours 

PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: June 1st2026 – August 21st, 2026 

LOCATION: TBD 

 

APPLICATION TIMELINE: Interviews will begin after February 17th2026. This posting will remain open until the position is filled. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Participate in mandatory technical and soft skills workshops to develop foundational trade knowledge and workplace competencies 

  • Assisting with general worksite or shop preparation, material handling, and basic skilled trades operations under professional supervision. 

  • Reading and interpreting basic technical drawings, instructions, or work plans to support accurate work execution. 

  • Operating basic tools, equipment, or machinery safely and effectively, as appropriate to the placement. 

  • Supporting a variety of foundational skilled trades tasks, which may include assembly, fabrication, installation, maintenance, production, or construction-related activities. 

  • Assisting with operational support tasks, which may include the safe handling, sorting, preparation, or organization of materials, tools, or products. 

  • Supporting warehouse, shop, or site operations by organizing inventory, preparing materials, testing products or components, and maintaining supplies. 

  • Maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment in accordance with workplace health and safety regulations. 

*All employees of Civiconnect are expected to follow Company Health and Safety policies, procedures, and work practices at all times, including participating in related training. 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

Physical Demands:  

  • Must be able to perform manual labour, including lifting, carrying, and moving materials or products.  

  • Required to stand for extended periods, bend, kneel, and use hand tools or machinery regularly.  


Environmental Conditions:  

  • Work may involve both indoor and outdoor work. Employees may be exposed to varying weather conditions, dust, and noise. 


Health and Safety:  

  • Proper safety equipment, such as hard hats, steel-toed boots, ear protection, and gloves, will be provided and must be worn as required.  

  • Participants must disclose any pre-existing medical conditions, allergies, or mobility limitations to ensure proper accommodation and a safe working environment.  

  • Regular health and safety briefings will be conducted to ensure awareness of potential risks and the measures in place to mitigate them.

  • Microsoft Office Suite 

  • Payworks 


SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: 

  • Willingness to learn and follow instructions. 

  • Strong problem-solving skills. 

  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work. 

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings. 

  • Effective communication and time management skills. 

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. 

The YSS is an integrated learning environment, and no prior experience is required, though familiarity with basic hand tools or general labour is an asset. 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: 

Civiconnect receives government funding based on certain eligibility requirements. Please only apply if you meet the following criteria: 

  • Must be able to work full-time for a duration of 12 weeks 

  • Must have access to reliable transportation 


You will need to provide certain administrative documents if offered employment including: 

  • Proof of ID (copy of Birth Certificate, Passport, Permanent Resident card) 

  • TD1 & TD1ON completed 

  • Direct deposit slip from financial institution
