Recreation Therapy Assistant - Term - Canada Summer Jobs Position
This position is sponsored through Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) which is a program under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS). It helps youth aged 15-30 gain paid summer work experience and develop skills for the job market.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Recreation Therapist Assistant is required to assist to plan, direct, and coordinate recreation-based programs for adults with diverse abilities. They will use a variety of modalities- including arts and crafts; drama, music, and dance; sports and games; aquatics; and community outings to help maintain or improve an individual’s physical, social, and emotional well-being. This position will complete administrative tasks, which may include developing, delivering, and formally evaluating recreational programming using a variety of methods, documenting an individual’s progress, and/or writing up their assessment notes.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the development and implementation of recreational therapy programs.
- Facilitate group and individual activities such as arts and crafts, games, sports, music, and outings.
- Monitor and document clients' progress and participation in activities.
- Provide support and encouragement to clients during activities.
- Maintain and organize activity materials and equipment.
- Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines during activities.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in recreation therapy or related field preferred.
- Previous experience in a healthcare or therapeutic setting is an asset.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Compassionate and patient demeanor.
- Basic knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles and practices.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification
- Creativity in planning and executing activities.
- Ability to motivate and engage clients.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to adapt activities to meet the needs of clients with varying abilities.
- Proficiency in using basic computer software for documentation purposes.
