Salary range for this position: $90,000 - 125,000 depending on experience.

The Position:

The Director of Boarding works diligently to ensure that each Boarding School student is known, valued and cared for and works collaboratively with the Upper School Leadership and Student Support teams (Head of the US, Assistant Heads of US, Directors of Guidance, Manager of the Health Centre, Co-Curricular Directors, Chaplain and Social Worker) to create an engaging boarding environment where students have access to a breadth of opportunities in a community that prioritizes wellbeing, belonging and engagement.

The Director of Boarding oversees the progress and development of boarding students in Grades 9-12. They set the direction for the content and delivery of boarding programming, including boarding advisory programming, weekend programming, and other community-building events. The Director of Boarding plays a key role in upholding the Code of Conduct and expectations for Senior School boarding students, and in ensuring their care and safety on campus, in collaboration with the Food Services provider and the facilities and security teams.

The Director of Boarding reports directly to the Head of Upper School and is accountable for developing a safe, equitable and inclusive culture that aligns with Havergal’s mission and values.

The role requires the successful candidate to live in school-provided housing.

Specific Accountabilities:

Program Design & Student Engagement

  • Develop and oversee a diverse boarding program, including evening/weekend activities and excursions anchored in the school’s strategic plan for wellbeing and learning. Develop an onboarding and orientation plan for new students.
  • Foster student agency through the Boarding Council and Boarding Prefect role.
  • Implement protocols to track and support student academic progress, attendance, and co-curricular engagement.

Pastoral Care & Student Support

  • Ensure adherence to the school’s policies and practices in supporting the wellbeing and safety of students. Maintain a culture of mutual respect, personal responsibility, and trust.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for boarding parents.
  • Proactively collaborate with the Health Centre, Guidance, and US Leadership regarding student needs.
  • Manage student behavioural issues using a progressive discipline model in alignment with school values.
  • Maintain up-to-date Guardian records and oversee and assist with all student legal documentation, such as visas, health insurance and passports.

Staff Leadership & Operations

  • Recruit, train, and supervise boarding staff. Conduct performance reviews and chair regular staff meetings.
  • Engage in ongoing professional learning to strengthen leadership in boarding life and student wellbeing. Support the professional growth and development of boarding staff through coaching, feedback and regular communication.  Design and facilitate comprehensive August orientations and monthly in-service training.
  • Ensure equitable and effective staffing rotations for 24/7 coverage and student safety.
  • Maintain the Boarding Handbooks (student and staff) and oversee student documentation (Visas, health insurance, passports).
  • Develop an annual Boarding School budget and serve as a prudent fiscal manager, tracking all expenses and billing in a timely manner.

Risk Management, Safety & Facilities

  • Partner with the Director of Risk Management and Facilities to maintain a secure living environment and serve as a member of the Emergency Response Team. Develop and update policies as needed. Manage the REACH platform for student leaves.
  • Oversee Health and Safety standards, crisis planning, and termly evacuation drills.
  • Monitor swipe card reports and coordinate with facilities for repairs and furnishings. Partner on a furniture replacement plan.

Strategic Collaboration & Growth

  • Partner with the Admissions team on recruitment, conducting interviews, and leading boarding tours.
  • Contribute content for the website, social media, and newsletters to highlight the boarding experience.
  • Collaborate with Food Services on meal planning and emergency food protocols.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s in Education, Social Work, or Nursing considered a benefit).
  • Minimum of at least 5 years’ experience in residential life, adolescent development and student wellbeing, and/or school leadership, supervising and supporting staff. Demonstrated experience in operational management, including oversight of budgets, facility maintenance coordination and staff duty rotations and scheduling.
  • Strong understanding of relevant legislation, safeguarding protocols, and school policies and practices related to student care, supervision, and employment responsibilities within a residential school setting.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to develop relationships with students, parents, faculty and staff.
  • Strong understanding of social-emotional learning (SEL), adolescent development and risk mitigation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex situations with sound professional judgment and a clear sense of accountability, including appropriate consultation with school leadership and student support professionals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development to support personal growth and leadership in student wellbeing and residential life.
