Animals & Operations Summer Jobs

These positions are funded through the Canada Summer Jobs grant program, a federal initiative that provides meaningful summer employment opportunities for youth while supporting community organizations.

To be eligible for these positions, applicants must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment, be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection, and be legally entitled to work in Canada.

This year, we are hiring across three streams: Administrative, Humane Education, and Animals & Operations. Applicants apply to the stream that best matches their interests and may be considered for multiple roles within that stream based on their skills, experience, and organizational needs.

Most positions are 35 hours per week for 8 weeks, with a small number of positions at 30 hours per week for 9 weeks. All roles are based on-site at Calgary Humane Society and must be completed on a consecutive basis without planned extended absences.

Be part of the front-line work that directly supports animals in our care and the people we serve. Roles in this stream contribute to daily shelter operations, including animal care, client support, adoptions, admissions, facility upkeep, and community outreach.

These positions are well-suited for individuals who are compassionate, adaptable, and motivated to make a tangible difference in a fast-moving, team-oriented environment.

  • Animal Care Attendant (4 positions): Provides daily care, cleaning, feeding, and monitoring of animals.
  • Community Outreach & Events Assistant: Supports outreach initiatives and represents CHS at community events.
  • Landscape & Maintenance Assistant: Helps maintain safe, clean, and welcoming indoor and outdoor spaces.
  • Adoption Counselor: Supports adopters in finding the right match and facilitates adoptions.
  • Client Experience Associate: Provides front-line customer service and supports client interactions.
  • Animal Admissions Counselor: Assists with animal intake and supports individuals surrendering animals.

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible for these positions, applicants must:

·      Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment

·      Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection

·      Be legally entitled to work in Canada

·      International students are not eligible under the Canada Summer Jobs program

 

Position Details:

·      Most positions are 35 hours/week for 8 weeks

·      Some positions are 30 hours/week for 9 weeks

·      Hours of work will include weekdays, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays

·      Positions must be completed on a consecutive, full-time basis

·      Start and end dates will vary slightly by role

·      All roles are based on-site at Calgary Humane Society

·      Successful candidates will be required to complete a police information check at their own expense to be arranged by Calgary Humane Society

·      Wage: $17.00/hour + 6% vacation pay (total compensation: $18.02/hour)
