Operations Engineer – The Overview

The Operations Engineer is an integral position within the Technical Services Team of Canlin Energy. The individual works closely with Asset Integrity, Maintenance Reliability and Automation (MRA) and field operations in an energic team environment. A successful candidate will help the team facilitate change with an end goal of guaranteeing safety, improving efficiencies, and controlling project cost. Our positive team-orientated environment empowers our staff to grow within their positions.. The Technical Services Team provides technical compliance, process safety, turnaround, engineering, and integrity related support in both the local operations and corporate space. The aim of the Technical Services Team is to deliver focused, prioritized engineering and integrity support to successfully maintain current and future business operational plans. 

The Operations Engineer, reporting to the Operations Engineering Team Lead, is required to provide day-to-day engineering assistance to local Operations, implement various prioritized projects relating to the existing surface facilities and pipeline networks, and assist with production optimization projects.  The Operations Engineer will be expected to bring technical support to the team by providing guidance/mentorship, and communicating on technical standards, Process Safety initiatives, and the Technical Services Goal/Action plan to field staff. 

This is a full-time position based out of the Wildcat Hills Office (just outside of Cochrane, AB), supporting the Wildcat Hills District. The Wildcat Hills District is comprised of multiple gathering systems, wells, and field compression all feeding the Wildcat Hills Gas Plant. The Wildcat Hills Gas Plant is a sour gas processing facility with a liquid Sulphur recovery operation.

 The Role

Troubleshoot Operational and Maintenance problems related to the facilities. 
Implement field optimization and loss avoidance activities including production optimization and cost reduction.
Advise on or address regulatory compliance concerns through support or projects.
Design and deliver in an efficient and safe manner various small to mid-sized projects following the Operations Project Delivery Process. 
•       Manage a team of contractors and construction inspectors to effectively schedule and execute said projects. 
Provide technical support for operational shutdowns and turnarounds, hazard assessments, and procedure development.
Evaluate Facility Engineering aspects of Third-Party Tie-ins.
Utilize and foster productive relationships with contracted Third-Party Engineering firms, Construction Inspectors, and other Vendors.
Promote a safety leadership culture and assist in incident investigation and implementation of corrective actions as required.
Uphold Canlin’s Engineering processes/standards and Personnel and Process Safety initiatives.  
Act as the custodian of Drawing Management at each field site.
Utilize and support the Canlin Process Safety processes.
Interface with Development Engineering to ensure an optimal and efficient development solution is selected from a facility viewpoint.
Fully engage with field operations staff to understand the needs of the area and opportunities for improvement.
Interface with the other teams within the Operations Department, and support teams in Calgary (such as JV, Finance, Surface Land, HSE, etc.)
Assist teams with budget preparation and stewardship.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Corporate and Industry Standards.
•       Foster a behavior of personal development. 
•       Engage internal or external assistance when working outside of individuals “Area of Expertise”.
Travel to filed sites as required.
Other duties as assigned. 

 The Person

Engineering Degree (preferably mechanical or chemical).
Minimum of 5 years related field-based experience in oil and gas operations engineering.
Experience in Facility work/modifications (plant, equipment, pipelines, maintenance, abandonments, troubleshooting, optimization, turnarounds), Project Management (small to medium sized projects), estimating, scheduling, construction practices, Personnel and Process Safety.
Enjoy teaching and sharing knowledge, can listen and help others shape their ideas.
Understanding of the Process, Operational, and Maintenance aspects of upstream operations, equipment, and terminology.
Familiarity with industry codes, standards, and regulations (e.g. AER, BCER, ABSA, ASME, CSA, and OH&S).
Strong supporter of a continuous improvement environment.
Good organizational, leadership, stakeholder management, and communication skills.
Independent and self-supporting work habits, as well as an ability to lead and work with teams.
Innovative problem-solving skills and the ability to think differently.
Possess both mechanical and technical skills, as well as a practical mindset.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment while ensuring safe, efficient project delivery.
Enthusiastic, adaptable, and respectful of others.
Professional Engineer status in Alberta.
Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent. 
Certification in H2S alive, First Aid, and WHMIS.
