Hillside Pines in a 50-elder home located in the heart of Bridgewater on Nova Scotia’s beautiful South Shore. We offer opportunities for meaningful work as part of a team creating the future of long-term care.

The Casual Cook is responsible for serving safe nutritious meals to Elders, Care Partners, Families, Volunteers, and Guests at Hillside Pines. This position provides an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about culinary arts to develop their skills while contributing to a supportive team environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote, encourage through one’s actions the Mission, Vision, and Values of Hillside Pines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Eden Philosophy of Care for Elders to assist in combating loneliness, helplessness, and boredom.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the provision of the best quality of care and service to the Elders and Care Partners of Hillside Pines.
  • Honesty and a high level of integrity are expected at all times.
  • To read, understand, and follow all departmental and facility policies.
  • Observe and practice all safety rules and regulations. To report any fire, safety or potential accident hazard to supervisor.
  • To understand WHMIS regulations and Food Safety standards as they pertain to specific duties. Maintain high standards of sanitation in all work procedures.
  • To communicate effectively with food service team, other care partners, Elders, families, volunteers, and your supervisor.
  • To attend annual and/or mandatory education sessions.
  • Specific to Both Areas:
  • Prepare desserts, baked goods for everyone, maintaining standards of food safety, food textures and portion control.
  • Ensure work area is kept clean and tidy. Maintain cooking equipment in a clean and sanitary condition. Maintain high standards of sanitation in all work procedures.
  • Strip tables and trays, scrape and stack dishes, operate dishwashers, clean and de-stain dishes, pots and pans as needed. Stack and put away clean dishes.
  • Wet mop, dry mop, wipe clean and dust assigned areas of the department.
  • Clean and sanitize dining tables and kitchenette areas.
  • Stores food supplies properly.
  • Assist cook if needed.
  • Dispose of compost, garbage and recyclables.
  • Specific to Pine View dining room and kitchenette:
  • Deliver food to Pine View dining area.
  • Serve tenants in dining room or via tray if needed. Ensure tenants receive appropriate food.
  • Any other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Ability to read, write and follow verbal and written instructions without constant supervision.
  • Physically able to perform assigned duties.
  • Ability to work in a respectful, collaborative manner as a team member, with all care partners.
  • Ability to relate well to elderly people, sensitive to their emotional, physical and spiritual needs.
  • Food Handlers Course or willingness to attend next available course. To be updated every 5 years.
  • WHMIS certification or willingness to attend next available course: updated a minimum of every 3 years.
  • Completion of the Alzheimer and Related Dementia Care course or willingness to obtain when the opportunity arises.
  • An understanding of the Eden Alternative Philosophy and/or a willingness to learn about re: same.
  • Is a Certified Eden Associate or is willing to train as same.
  • Must be willing to participate on departmental, facility-wide committees i.e. Learning Circles, JOH&S, Liaison, Elder Care Conferences, Care partner meetings as needed.

Working Conditions:

  • Work may take place in a warm and humid environment.
  • Must be able to tolerate heat when working near ovens, dishwashers, and during temperature changes when entering or exiting refrigerators.
  • Must exercise caution on wet or slippery floors to prevent falls.
  • Work areas include the Main Kitchen, Hillside Pines dining areas, and the Pine View dining room and kitchenette.
