POSITION SUMMARY

The Vice President of Construction at TNDC represents a unique opportunity to build on TNDC’s 40-year legacy of leadership, innovation, and community-driven economic development. This role is pivotal in advancing TNDC’s heavy civil construction and mine development projects within the Tahltan Territory, also known as the Golden Triangle, one of the world’s richest resource regions. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Vice President of Construction will shape the future of TNDC’s operations, driving sustainable growth, supporting critical mineral development, and fostering economic empowerment for the Tahltan Nation.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: 

A.  Strategic Leadership and Operational Excellence

  • Lead TNDC’s heavy civil construction and mine development projects, setting and achieving goals for safety, quality, budget, and schedule adherence.
  • Apply lean construction principles to streamline operations, eliminate waste, and enhance value in project delivery.
  • Oversee the implementation of project management tools that support accurate planning, reporting, and financial controls, aligning operations with TNDC’s growth strategy.
  • To manage direct reports, including Annual Performance Reviews, periodic reviews of progress toward annual goals of any direct reports. Establishment of annual performance goals of any direct reports with Senior Project Manager.

B.  Cultural Integration and Community Impact

  • Uphold Tahltan cultural values, ensuring construction operations positively impact the community and the environment.
  • Facilitate employment and training opportunities for Tahltan members, building local capacity and fostering long-term economic independence.

C.  Financial and Business Acumen

  •  Develop strategies to maximize profitability and resource efficiency, supporting TNDC’s three-year strategic focus on sustainable growth.
  •  Partner with the CEO and leadership team to identify new opportunities in heavy construction and critical mineral development, positioning TNDC as a preferred contractor in the Tahltan Territory, also referred to as the Golden Triangle
  •  In conjunction with staff, establish companywide systems and procedures for reporting, project controls, financial controls, and employee relations.
  •  Set up measurable standards of performance for each department, measure that performance against established goals.

D.  Team Leadership and Development

  • Mentor and manage direct reports, conducting performance evaluations and setting annual goals that align with TNDC’s values and strategic objectives.
  • Cultivate a work environment rooted in Accountability, Integrity, Respect, and Unity, fostering teamwork, cultural respect, and an unwavering commitment to safety.
  • Display the highest level of organizational and communication skills.

E.  Stakeholder Engagement and Public Representation

  • Act as a key representative for TNDC with clients, partners, and community stakeholders, championing TNDC’s reputation for excellence and cultural integrity.
  • Effectively communicate TNDC’s mission, values, and project goals, ensuring alignment across project objectives, community interests, and client expectations.
  • Can clearly communicate the company’s status and direction to staff, owners, and partners.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related field; an advanced degree, such as an MBA, is advantageous.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent project management credential preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge in Lean Management and Lean Construction Principles is highly valued.
  • 10 - 15 years progressive leadership experience in the Heavy Civil and Mining industry.
  • Extensive experience in heavy civil construction and mine development, ideally within indigenous or community-focused organizations.
  • Proven track record of managing large-scale construction projects with a focus on efficiency, safety, quality, and profitability.
  • Demonstrated expertise in lean construction principles, waste reduction, and value-driven project execution.

KEY COMPENTENCIES

  • Strong leadership, analytical, and operational skills, with the ability to implement lean methodologies to optimize performance.
  • In-depth financial acumen with experience in budgeting, project cost control, and strategic growth in the construction or natural resources sectors.
  • Skilled in managing culturally diverse teams and building inclusive environments, especially within indigenous communities.
  • Must be thoroughly versed in the operations of a construction company, general contractor and design-build firm.

  • Proficiency in construction management software, Microsoft Office Suite, and advanced project controls, with expertise in lean management tools.
  • Strong knowledge of industry regulations, environmental standards, and safety protocols, particularly in heavy civil and mine development projects.
  • Ability to complete the following reports: Daily Construction Reports, Weekly Progress Reports, Monthly Project Report.
  • Capable of representing the company publicly in a professional manner.
  • Time Management. Develop, organize, plan and have time management abilities to utilize, solve problems creatively, manage/schedule multiple priorities, and adherence of deadlines.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to integrate Tahltan cultural perspectives into operational practices.
  • Skilled in stakeholder engagement, building trust, and maintaining open communication channels with Tahltan community members, project partners, and clients.
  • Communication. Must possess writing and verbal communication skills including proper email etiquette, and the ability to work effectively with other team members.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Standard 8-hour shift, Monday to Friday, with occasional evening and weekend work based on project needs.
  • Flexibility to work for extended hours to meet deadlines.
  • Up to 50% travel, including site visits, client meetings, conferences, and training events.
  • Remote flexibility with required in-office attendance for specific business needs or strategic meetings.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license required for travel.
