Wellness Department Program Coordinator
Job Summary
Working as part of the Wellness Team and reporting directly to the Wellness Team Manager, the Wellness Department Program Coordinator supports the planning, implementation, and reporting of programming in the Wellness and Health Department. The Program Coordinator will work with Wellness teams including the Garden, Art Therapy, Wellness Room, Mental Health and Substance Use, to offer a range of cultural and wellness programs to support the health of the urban Indigenous community. This position requires a collaborative approach to working with internal and external partners, and a detailed approach to program delivery.
Roles and Responsibilities
As a Wellness Department Program Coordinator, job duties include the following:
• Collaborate with WHD teams including the Garden, Art Therapy, MHSU, Indigenous Wellness Providers, and Indigenous Cultura and Language, to plan and implement programming.
• Responsible for program logistics including coordinating internal and external Knowledge Keepers, Elders and facilitators to lead programming, booking program spaces, arranging food for hosting, marketing programming, and participating in program delivery as needed.
• Coordinating the Wellness Room including working with partner agencies to develop schedules for offerings (massage, herbal therapy, foot care etc), booking program participants, maintaining Wellness Room supplies and equipment, and marketing programming.
• Collect data on program offerings and participation, and support reporting for Wellness programming according to funder requirements.
• Provide intermittent support to plan and host the VNFC weekly Community Soup Lunch.
• Provide administrative support to the Wellness Team Manager as required.
As a member of the VNFC team, job duties include the following:
• Maintain confidentiality
• Document and report activity in alignment with VNFC practices and supports internal and external reporting as required
• Attend relevant professional training and meetings when directed
• Participate in staff development, staff meetings and department meetings as required, including community and cultural events
• Participate in data collection and evaluation tasks as requested
Knowledge and Skills
Familiarity and experience in Indigenous Communities
• Some knowledge of Indigenous cultures and practices including from the territory in which the work of VNFC takes place. Ability to speak about one’s own Indigenous culture, if applicable, and any communities the (prospective) employee has previously lived in or held jobs within.
• In depth knowledge of the experience of Indigenous peoples in Canada including the ongoing processes of colonization, discrimination, and structural violence, and the effects on the health and wellbeing of Indigenous communities; understanding of the wellness and healing capacities of Indigenous cultural resiliency and resurgence.
• Knowledge and practice of providing community-based services to Indigenous peoples using philosophies of cultural humility and cultural safety.
Communication Skills and Abilities
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills with the ability to successfully develop and maintain relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders
• Excellent written communication skills with the ability to collaboratively write reports, presentations, electronic correspondence, proposals, and other forms of professional communication.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients and the general public
• Proficiency in software: Microsoft Office 365 including Word, Excel, and Outlook; Canva; Adobe Pro
Leadership Skills and Abilities
• Ability to work independently and be part of an integrated community team and in partnership with a variety of agencies.
• Ability to multi-task while remaining composed and maintaining a professional attitude in high stress situations.
• Ability to move multiple projects forward at the same time and manage competing priorities and opportunities.
• Facilitation skills and techniques an asset.
Program Knowledge and Abilities
· Ability to practice using philosophies of cultural safety and humility, harm reduction, and trauma informed care.
· Knowledge and ability to work ethically and maintain professional boundaries when working with vulnerable clients.
· Ability to spend a major portion of the workday standing, walking and/or sitting as well as possible bending and stretching, due to physical requirements of the work.
Qualifications
Education
- Completed some post-secondary education in a related field such as Indigenous studies, community development, social services, public administration, etc., or an equivalent combination of relevant training, lived experience, community involvement and/or employment experience.
- Recognized course(s) in cultural safety and humility or equivalent lived, cultural, community and/or professional experience.
Work Experience
- Approximately 2 years of relevant experience organizing and hosting community spaces and working respectfully with Elders and/or Knowledge Keepers. Relevant experience may be gained through employment, volunteering, cultural work and/or community involvement.
- Experience working in an Indigenous-led or Indigenous-serving organization, Indigenous community, Friendship Centre or community nonprofit setting is an asset.
Licenses and/or Certificates
• Valid BC Driver’s license an asset
• First Aid certification an asset
• Must provide a current (within 6 mos.) Attorney General Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check
