As a Community Governed Organization and part of the Musquodoboit Harbour community since 1979, The Birches is home to 42 long term care residents who benefit from our focus on resident-centered care and honouring each person’s lifelong routine.

of disciplines, including nursing, continuing care assistants, recreation,
maintenance, food services, laundry, housekeeping, and administrative support.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Recreation Programmer is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating leisure/ therapeutic recreation on an individual basis and/or group program. The Recreation Programmer must demonstrate an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and psycho-social benefits that therapeutic recreation provides in maintaining and/or enhancing the quality of life for residents.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A post-secondary degree in Recreation/Leisure Studies OR a two (2) year community college diploma in Recreation. Preference given to those with bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation and certification with NCTRC.
- Gerontology Certificate an asset.
- Minimum one year work experience in providing leadership in recreation planning and implementing of programs in a long-term care setting an asset.
- An active membership with the Nova Scotia Therapeutic Recreation Association and keep with current new programming approaches and trends in the field is an asset.
- Must possess the following characteristics and skills: strong interpersonal skills, including active listening and empathy; effective oral and written communication skills; excellent organizational and planning skills; creative problem-solving and good assessment skills.
- Basic computer skills required.
- Must provide valid criminal record check and vulnerable record check.

Salary Range: In accordance with current collective agreement between The Birches
and C.U.P.E. Local 3199
HOURS OF WORK: Schedule is flexible, includes weekends, days/evenings and availability for special events.
