Automation Specialist

POSITION BACKGROUND

As part of the Company’s Power Services team, the Automation Specialist will promote and establish excellent relationships and use their area expert skills to assist with, or lead, certain aspects of a project. The Automation Specialist will organize, instruct, and ensure their position of the project is completed within the required deadline and in a safe manner. This portion will also be the key technical expert for industrial automation programing modification on any Company or client equipment. Innovation and environmental sustainability are key expectation in this role. For the purposes of this document, 'Company' refers to Ketek Group Inc. and all its subsidiaries.


CORE DUTIES

Programming and Development:

  • Design and program PLCs using multiple languages (Structured Text, Ladder Logic, SFC).
  • Develop and implement machine communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profibus).
  • Collaborate with the IoT and Remote Monitoring team to integrate automation with the Company’s systems, utilizing JSON, MQTT, and similar technologies.

Project Support:

  • Work with project teams to define automation requirements and ensure compliance with client specifications.
  • Develop project requirements by reviewing project proposals and plan while conferring with management.
  • Determine project specifications by studying product design, customer requirements, and performance standards.
  • Complete technical studies and preparing cost estimates.
  • Conduct system tests, debug and optimize performance to meet functional standards.
  • Assist in creating technical documentation, including system design and operation manuals.
  • Prepare project status reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.

Innovation and Maintenance:

  • Evaluate and implement new technologies to enhance automation capabilities.
  • Provide troubleshooting and technical support for deployed automation systems.
  • Contribute to ongoing development of the Company’s IoT and remote monitoring software.

Client and Team Collaboration:

  • Communicate effectively with clients to understand automation needs and purpose solution.
  • Provide training and support to team members on automation and programming best practices.
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment by enforcing procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Maintains product and company reputation by complying with regulation.
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Consult with businesses, governments, and special interest groups.
  • Ensure ISO 9001 Quality Management System Guidelines are met.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on environment, fiscal, and technological impacts of projects.

Other Duties:

  • Ensure that all Company's policies and Occupational Health & Safety regulations are followed.
  • Represent the Company at different national and international forums.
  • Represent the Company in a light that is commensurate with values of Management and the Corporate Vision and Mission Statements.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Required

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience of PLC programming in multiple programming languages.
  • Expertise in machine communication protocols such as Modbus, Ethernet/IP, and Profibus.
  • Strong understanding of electrical control systems and automation principles.
  • Proficiency in software development for industrial of IoT systems (e.g., Java, C++, JSON, MQTT).
  • Strong Electrical Design and Control knowledge.
  • Strong knowledge of oil and gas, chemical, manufacturing, technology, and infrastructure and development projects.
  • AutoCAD design knowledge is an asset.
  • Fluent in English language (reading, written, spoken)
  • Effective verbal, listening, and written communication skills.
  • Able to deal with the public in a positive, courteous, and respectful manner.
  • Able to handle changing schedules and priorities, with high-level prioritization skills.
  • Strong work ethic and organizational planning skills with attention to detail

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation or
  • Certified Engineering Technologist (CET); or
  • Journeyman Electrician with automation expertise.
  • Recognized technical expertise by the marketplace.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with other prevailing codes and guidelines.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand/sit, talk/hear, use hands/fingers to operate a computer and telephone, stoop, and kneel.
  • Prolonged exposure to computer screens.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50lbs) may be required.
  • Use mechanical aids: overhead crane, forklift, pallet jack, and dolly may be required.

Work Environment

  • Office environment (80%), Field environment (20%).
  • May be required to travel to meetings and conferences.
  • May be required to work weekends and outside of regular office hours.
  • Pre-Access drug and alcohol testing may be required for Client site visits.
