People and Culture Generalist

The Organization

Since 1981, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto has served as a place to call home for families with seriously ill children undergoing treatment. RMHC Toronto encompasses a House for 81 families in downtown Toronto and seven Family Rooms in hospitals across the Greater Toronto Area and in Sudbury. The families we serve come from throughout Ontario, across Canada and around the world.

 

Position Overview

We are seeking a People and Culture Generalist to join our team at our House located in downtown Toronto, at 240 McCaul Street, Toronto. This role will report to the Director, People and Culture, and will support a variety of People & Culture functions, ensuring a positive, inclusive, and engaged workplace. You will assist in a range of HR activities, including recruitment, employee relations, benefits administration, HRIS support, payroll processing, employee experience, compliance, and DEI, among others.


While RMHC Toronto offers a flexible work environment, the requirements of this position include regular attendance onsite to support our front-line mission of supporting families.

Key Responsibilities

  • Onboarding & Employee Experience: Manage onboarding process, 30-60-90-day check-ins and process improvements. Implement and automate procedures where possible by leveraging technology.
  • Recruitment & Staffing: Support the People & Volunteer Engagement Manager with recruitment activities for staff and volunteer positions.
  • Payroll & Benefits Administration: Oversee payroll preparation and updates while collaborating with Finance team. Manage employee benefits & RRSP administration, including enrollment, updates, and compliance.
  • Employee Relations & Communication: Provide HR guidance on employee relations, performance issues, ensuring consistent and fair application of policies. Handle employee communication, employment letters, agreements, and updates.
  • Health & Safety (H&S): Participate in the Health and Safety committee, support initiatives, and ensuring compliance with workplace safety regulations and training.
  • Policy & Compliance Management: Maintain and update the employee handbook, oversee mandatory training, and prepare regulatory compliance reports.
  • HR Systems & Reporting: Manage HRIS data, generate reports and key metrics for leadership, and maintain accurate employee records.
  • Professional Development: Track and support professional development, ensuring employees are aware of development opportunities and that progress is documented.
  • Employee Recognition & Events: Plan and execute employee recognition programs, including significant dates, milestones, and appreciation events.
  • General HR Support: Provide ongoing administrative support for various HR functions and contribute to continuous improvements in HR processes.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 3-5 years of HR generalist experience, with exposure to onboarding, employee relations, benefits, payroll, HRIS management, and compliance. Experience in the non-profit sector is a plus.
  • Proven ability to manage employee relations, compensation and benefits, and health and safety programs.
  • Solid knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices, with a focus on compliance and process optimization.
  • Post-secondary education in business administration, human resources, or a related field. CHRP or CHRL designation is an asset.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive HR matters.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and experience working with HRIS applications.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to generate and interpret HR data for decision-making.
  • Adaptability and willingness to embrace new technologies and approaches as needed.
  • Customer-service oriented with a solutions-driven approach to HR activities.

Additional Requirements

Completion of satisfactory reference check and a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.
