Title: Volunteer Child & Youth Program Assistant

Hours: Weekday evenings and weekends; minimum 3 hours per week

Location: John W. Lindsay YMCA

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Child & Youth Program Coordinator, Child & Youth Program volunteers  help staff create engaging programs for children and youth. Volunteers will help staff deliver safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate programs that emphasize physical literacy as key to building healthy communities. Staff will implement fitness and wellness activities in line with YMCA standards, child safety requirements, and core values.

Responsibilities

  • Arrive 15 minutes before your program in order to help prepare the space. 
  • Support staff in the delivery of hands-on programming and provide participants with a safe, inclusive, positive environment. 
  • Assist staff with program set-up and take-down, preparation of materials, cleaning, tidying, and other duties to keep camp activities safe, well-run, and on time.
  • Assist staff in maintaining YMCA policies, etiquette, and safety requirements.
  • Complete administrative tasks such as taking program attendance, being sure to check in those participants who join after class has started.
  • Build inclusive, positive working relationships with others.
  • Report any known or predicted safety hazards.
  • Assist the instructor with documenting any incidents or accidents, no matter how minor, and communicate these back to the Coordinator on the same day. 

Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience working with children and youth as a babysitter, coach, youth group leader, or other similar role.
  • Interest in supporting youth programming and engaging with children and youth.
  • Ability to maintain a safe and organized environment.
  • Post-secondary education in Early Childhood Education or related field an asset.
  • Communication skills to work with youth, parents, and staff.
