The Senior Scale-Leadhand provides leadership and operational oversight to the scale house team, ensuring accurate and efficient weighing, documentation, and coordination of inbound and outbound materials. This role supports Post Collection Operations Manager in daily operations, training, and maintaining quality, safety, and compliance standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Scale Operations & Documentation:
- Supervise and perform accurate data entry of purchase/sale tickets in the computerized scale system.
- Verify weights of inbound/outbound loads, directing adjustments as needed to ensure compliance.
- Ensure recyclable materials meet safety standards (e.g., no banned materials) and buyer specifications.
- Maintain precise records for shipments, inventory, and compliance reports.
Team Leadership & Coordination:
- Train, mentor, and supervise scale attendants ensuring adherence to procedures and safety protocols.
- Coordinate with Plant Supervisors, and shipping/receiving teams to optimize material flow.
- Act as the primary point of contact for drivers, customers, and internal staff regarding scale operations.
Safety & Compliance:
- Enforce PPE requirements and safe practices for employees, drivers, and visitors.
- Conduct routine checks to ensure the scale house and surrounding areas are clean, organized, and hazard-free.
- Ensure compliance with company policies and environmental regulations.
- Participate in JOSH committee.
- Enter first aid and incident reporting in QuickBase.
Administrative & Operational Support:
- Generate daily/weekly/monthly reports on tonnage, discrepancies, and operational issues.
- Perform internal and external reports (weekly/monthly inventory reports).
- Assist with administrative tasks (e.g., filing, scheduling, etc.) as needed.
- Create purchase orders using Business Central (software); have purchase orders approved, received, batched and submitted to Accounts Payable in a timely manner; submit monthly accrual report, as needed.
- Administers and monitors various plant related financial functions including invoices, expense claims, purchase orders, purchasing of office/plant/maintenance supplies.
- Provide administrative support for Plant management.
- Assist Post-Collection Administration Manager and Post-Collection Operations Manager with other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills:
Required:
- A College Diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred, within business administration, logistics and supply chain management
- 2+ years of experience in scale operations, logistics, or a supervisory role in a similar industry.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Outlook) and scale software; ability to type 45+ WPM.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to multitask under pressure.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal/written) and customer service focus.
Preferred:
- Experience in waste management, recycling, or manufacturing.
- Knowledge of inventory management or quality control processes.
- First aid certification – level 1
- Fluency in other languages (strong asset).
Working Conditions:
- Plant environment with exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
- Shift work (days/evenings), weekends, or holidays as needed.
