Who We Are:
Heritage Park is Canada's largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The Park features historical buildings, costumed interpreters, working antiques, and various exhibits that provide insight into the region's past.
Job Overview:
Under the direction of the Chief Engineer, the Assistant Chief Engineer supports the overall operation of the Heritage Park railway system. Activities will include but not be limited to the overall operation and maintenance of all locomotives, rolling stock, tracks and other equipment coming under the jurisdiction of the Chief Engineer. Also assists in restoration work as directed by the Chief Engineer.
Responsibilities:
- Under the guidance of the Chief Engineer, operate and maintain all antique pressure vessels (steam locomotive, steam tractor, steam roller, and steam crane) within the Park Village as well as inspect, monitor and maintain the tracks
- Maintain, repair and restore locomotives and all rolling stock to preserve each piece to its fullest life expectancy
- Ensure all Railway steam and other steam driven equipment is maintained and operated in a safe manner
- Assist in the preparation and operation of the antique train during scheduled runs, including start-up procedures and shutdown activities
- Keep a vigilant eye on gauges and instruments, promptly reporting any irregularities or malfunctions to the Chief Engineer for immediate attention
- Conduct routine safety checks on the antique train, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations, and assisting in implementing necessary safety measures
- Assist in organizing and complying with the required railway/locomotive inspections in order to preserve Heritage Park's operating licenses and good standing with governing jurisdictions
- Be prepared to assist in emergency situations, following established procedures and protocols to ensure the safety of passengers, crew, and the antique train
- Maintain concise records, logs, and written documentation on railway maintenance as required by law and in support of sound Park archival practices
- In the absence of the Chief Engineer, schedule and supervise seasonal railway staff which includes delegating tasks, monitoring workflows, providing feedback, and providing guidance and support
- Perform comprehensive mechanical maintenance on Park facilities, exhibits, vehicles, and equipment, ensuring their safe and optimal functioning
- Perform general metal work and welding to repair and extend life expectancy
- Ensure a safe, efficient, and reliable workflow through proper care, storage, and organization of tools and equipment used
- Provide an exceptional visitor experience by interacting with passengers in a helpful and courteous manner, answering questions about the antique train, its history, and providing a positive and informative experience
- Perform other duties as required

Required Qualifications:
- Completion of High School and completion of a 3rd Class Power Engineer Certification is required – consideration will be given to the completion of ABSA’s Part A and B examinations as a certified 4th Class Power Engineer
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a role that demonstrates skilled mechanical aptitude; diesel mechanic experience including familiarity with diesel engines is an asset
- A minimum of six (6) months of experience supervising a team including delegating tasks, monitoring workflow and providing feedback.
- Railway experience is an asset
- Must possess a working knowledge of antique boiler design, operation and regulations, with a demonstrated ability to maintain mechanical maintenance items
- Familiarity with NBIC, ASME, AB 534, CSA-B51 as it pertains to historical and locomotive boilers
- Prior experience working in a COR (Certificate of Recognition for Health and Safety) certified organization is an asset
- Excellent demonstrated communication skills (verbal and written)
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in a client-faced setting

- All successful candidates (over the age of 18) will be required to go through Police Information Check as a condition of employment.
Special Clothing and Equipment:
- Appropriate costuming and safety equipment will be provided by Heritage Park (if applicable)
- Maintenance of costumes and safety equipment is an employee responsibility
- Footwear, as designated by the Heritage Park Costume Department, will be provided by the employee
Special Working Conditions:
- The position will be exposed to weather extremes and will work both indoors and outdoors
- This position is physically demanding, and the incumbent must have the ability to lift heavy items, work in awkward positions in cramped spaces, stand and move items for long periods of time, and walk throughout the Park for extended periods
Hours of Work:
- The standard hours for this position are 40 hours per week
- The schedule will generally be five consecutive days per week (Monday to Friday)
- Occasional holiday, evening and weekend work may be required
