Shelter Overnight Worker - 1 Year Term Position for Leave Coverage

 Summary

Working as part of the Shelter Team, and reporting directly to the Shelter Overnight Supervisor, the Overnight Worker supports operation, daily tasks and processes of the VNFC Shelter, which provides temporary shelter for unhoused community.

Roles and Responsibilities

As an Overnight Worker, job duties include the following:

       Work within the parameters of health and safety, with particular regard to communicable disease protocols as they change and adapt with new information

       Regular and consistent sanitization of surface areas in line with communicable disease protocol

       Participate in daily team check-in and debrief, transferring information to the Overnight Supervisor

       Assist in daily activities including shelter setup, food preparation, guest welcoming, and inventory

       Help clients build connections and supports to access programming at VNFC, or through other partner agencies throughout the region

       Assist with meal distribution, which at times may require assembly

       Ensure the building is properly cleaned and secured

       Assist clients in having a successful time at VNFC by supporting them to understand the policies of the Shelter

       Driving for client pickup and/or drop-off

 

As a member of the VNFC team, job duties include the following:

          Maintain confidentiality

          Document and report activity in alignment with VNFC practices and supports internal and external reporting as required

          Attend relevant professional training and meetings when directed


          Participate in staff development, staff meetings and department meetings as required, including community and cultural events

          Participate in data collection and evaluation tasks as requested

Knowledge and Skills

Familiarity and experience in Indigenous Communities

       Some knowledge of Indigenous cultures and practices including from the territory in which the work of VNFC takes place.  Ability to speak about one’s own Indigenous culture, if applicable, and any communities the (prospective) employee has previously lived in or held jobs within.

       Knowledge and practice of providing community-based services to Indigenous peoples using philosophies of cultural humility and cultural safety.

 

Communication Skills and Abilities

       Good written and spoken communication skills with the ability to write electronic correspondence, and other forms of professional communication.

       Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients and the general public

       Proficiency in Microsoft Office Outlook

 

Leadership Skills and Abilities

·         Ability to work independently and be part of an integrated community team and in partnership with a variety of agencies.

·         Ability to multi-task while remaining composed and maintaining a professional attitude in high stress situations.

·         Modeling professional and proactive behaviour

 

Program Abilities and Knowledge

·         Ability to practice using philosophies of cultural safety and humility, harm reduction, and trauma informed care.

·         Knowledge and ability to work ethically and maintain professional boundaries when working with vulnerable clients.

·         Ability to spend a major portion of the workday standing, walking and/or sitting as well as possible bending and stretching, due to physical requirements of the work; this is a waking overnight shift

·         De-escalation experience

·         Understanding of how to triage and prioritize tasks

 

Qualifications

Education

       Recognized course(s) related to position are an asset, particularly any focused on cultural safety and humility; or equivalent lived and/or professional experience

 

Work Experience

       Preference for past experience working in an Indigenous serving organization, services for homelessness, addictions, or mental health, or community setting.

 

 

Licenses and/or Certificates

       Valid Class 4 unrestricted BC Driver’s license

       Clean Driver’s record

       First Aid certification

       FoodSafe

 

Other 

          Required to provide current vulnerable sector criminal record check 


                  This position requires evening, overnight, weekend, and irregular hours.
