Laboratory Technician - Portage la Prairie

Avena Foods is actively seeking a Laboratory Technician  to undertake laboratory testing of their processed ingredients at their Portage la Prairie, Manitoba location. This posting is for a full time, permanent position. The incumbent will work with other members of the R&D team and will be responsible for receiving and analyzing submitted samples according to standard procedures and for accurately recording data, maintaining laboratory equipment, and keeping laboratory and work space clean and organized.  The laboratory technician will work independently, as well as part of a team.  

Duties and Responsibilities

• Accurately perform laboratory tests according to standard procedures.
• Coordinate with FSQA staff when samples need to be sent to third party testing\
• Enter data in specified spreadsheet; make observations and interpret findings.
• Perform standard statistical analysis of data; assist with report writing.
• Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment; assist in the ordering of laboratory supplies.
• Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
• Practice safe work habits and comply with all health and safety regulations.
• Assist with sampling and shipment of samples to customers.
• Help to implement, maintain, and continuously improve the company’s laboratory manual (policies, procedures, records); assist in the annual review of the manual.
• Receive, label, and log submitted samples.
• Other duties as required.

Required Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate is a results orientated and innovative individual with 1-2 years of work experience as a laboratory technician.  The candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science/Science or a Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology. The successful individual must have:  

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially Excel)
• Strong analytical and organizational skills
• Strong attention to detail; ability to multi-task
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team
• Ability to accurately maintain data records and to assist in report writing
