Summary of Duties:

The Nursery Supervisor supports the design, establishment, and operation of a native plant and tree nursery. During the early stages, the role focuses on assisting with nursery planning and build-out, and completing any required training to be ready for operations. As the nursery becomes operational, the Nursery Supervisor is responsible for day-to-day nursery activities, successful propagation of native shrubs and trees, supervision of seasonal nursery staff, and seed collection and processing. This role will continue to be defined as the work progresses and the nursery develops.

 

Key Deliverables and Expectations:

• Assists in planning, designing, and setting up the nursery, including practical support during construction and implementation.

• Works closely with forestry staff during the initial stages to support nursery start-up activities and operational readiness.

• Completes training and education required to address skill gaps prior to the nursery becoming operational (as identified by the Manager).

• Oversees germination and propagation activities to support consistent, healthy plant production.

• Manages day-to-day nursery operations, including irrigation, fertilization, monitoring plant health, and general nursery upkeep.

• Supervises seasonal nursery staff, including work planning, task assignment, and day-to-day oversight to ensure work is completed safely and effectively.

• Supports seed collection, processing, and storage activities to ensure reliable inputs for propagation.

• Maintains nursery equipment, tools, and facilities, including routine checks and basic upkeep, and identifies repair or replacement needs.

• Establishes practical processes for organizing nursery work and making effective use of available labour and time.

• Coordinates, as required, with external suppliers, training providers, and (as the nursery matures) shipping and buyer contacts related to native plant distribution.

• Performs other related duties as requested.

 

Experience and Attributes:

• Willingness to learn, adapt, and work through evolving priorities and conditions.

• Previous experience in horticulture, nursery operations, or plant propagation is preferred.

• Previous experience supervising others is preferred.

• Self-starter with the ability to work independently and follow through on tasks.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Practical approach to problem-solving, with comfort improvising when conditions change.

• Positive attitude and ability to work well with others.
