As a member of the culinary team, the Sous Chef assists the Manager Food Services in overseeing the food operation of the Phoenix Society and areas in which food production and preparation take place. This includes the Phoenix Food Truck program. The sous chef assists the kitchen manager to coordinate and maximize the food production and human resources so the Society’s standard of service and value to clients are achieved and maintained. As a member of the kitchen service team, the Sous Chef is the lead staff in coordinating how the food truck is utilized and promoted. The position is accountable for:


• Supervision and scheduling of Surrey based kitchen staff
• Quality Assurance


Responsibilities:


Administration of Operations
• Lead role in ensuring that the operations of the Surrey culinary team achieves a consistent high quality of services that meets and exceeds requirements.
• Acting as an ambassador for the Phoenix Society, responsible for the coordination of Food Truck catering and overall food truck operations.
• Assist the Kitchen Manager in ordering supplies and stock.
• Relief cook for staff on leave.
• Cooks for special events as organized/requested by various departments within the Society
• When not coordinating the food truck, working in the kitchen on a full-time basis as needed.
• Working with Kitchen Manager to plan the menu, including efficient and cost-effective ordering of food.
• Ensure a high level of service, responsiveness, and professionalism at events, when dealing with business associates and the public.
• Adhere to and implement sanitation regulations and safety regulations both in the kitchen and food truck.
• Ordering supplies, working to a budget. Reports all defective equipment to maintenance department for repair.
• Participates in the team’s planning and implementation of quality improvement projects such as evaluating customer and resident needs, improving food truck services, and implementing new service strategies.
• Liaise with partner agency and respond to inquiries.
• Participates in data collection and outcome measurement of sales and delivery.
• Performs other duties as required.


Food Truck Management


• Cooks on the food truck when doing any catering business
• Works to ensure a safe, well-maintained food truck.
• Maintains and oversees calendar of food truck events and activities
• Effectively coordinates, supervises and is accountable for the daily operations of the food truck and kitchen to ensure operational quality requirements and standards of excellence are always maintained.
• Ensuring the truck is maintained including services, checking equipment, fuel usage,
cleaning and signage operation.


Human Resources and Administration :


• Provides supervision, direction, coaching and assistance to staff in the completion of daily operating tasks.
• Onboards, trains, employees, volunteers and on shift responsibilities and job routines.
• Motivates staff team to maintain and exceed agency work standards. Ability to delegate staff and consistently produce results. able to work with different cultures.
• Ensures that all documentation, responsibilities, and routines are completed.
• Performs other tasks and duties as required and maintains quality standards as set by the kitchen manager


Coaching:


• Coaches staff as appropriate, to improve performance, and increase job satisfaction.
• Motivates and coaches’ staff to achieve established goals that meet and/or exceed program and organizational needs.
Community Relations:
• Effectively promotes the Society’s Food Truck programs and the organization’s integrated services.
• Promotes effective liaison activities with the community in a professional manner and promotes/encourages community involvement in the program.


Quality Assurance:


• Ensures that the Society’s Food Truck program operate in compliance with Phoenix Society Policy and
Procedures and all relevant health and safety legislation.
• Maintains up to date knowledge of fire safety regulations and other emergency policies and procedures
• Leads on maintaining high standards of work quality.


Working Conditions:


Along with working with members of the public, this position is required to work with facilities that have co-located services. The ability to function independently while managing multiple tasks and the ability to adapt to change is an ongoing expectation of this position.
The hours will be determined by the Kitchen Manager. This position may be required to work on Saturday and Sundays.


Qualifications:


• Grade 12
• Professional Cook Training Certificate.
• 3 years of recent, related experience in the food/hospitality industry.
• Fluent and able to effectively communicate professionally, orally and written.
• Experienced in providing a person centred and community minded environment.
• Trained and experienced in records, reports, statistics, and database management.
• Proficient in MS Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet, experienced in database management.
• In working with marginalized people affected by problematic substance use, homelessness, emotional and mental health issues, unemployment, lack of education and involvement with the criminal justice system
• Food safe advanced & Safety Supervisor
• Satisfactory completion of a criminal records check with vulnerable sector screening is required
• Satisfactory completion of Tuberculosis Screening form is required
• Satisfactory completion of Employee Immunization Record form is required
• Class 5 driver’s license
• First aid certification with CPR is required

Salary for this role is between $26.59  - $ 28.22 per hour.
