The Crisis Centre of BC is dedicated to providing help and hope to individuals, organizations, and communities.

Our offices are located on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh nations. We have been in operation since 1969.

Spanning the spectrum of crisis support, suicide prevention, and postvention, we offer:

  • Immediate access to barrier-free, non-judgemental, confidential support and follow-up through 24/7 phone lines and online services.
  • Education and training programs that promote mental wellness and equip schools, organizations and communities to assist people at risk of suicide.

Our programs work to ensure timely access to support, destigmatize suicide and mental health concerns, and increase awareness and skills for mental health. We foster and create compassionate, connected, suicide-safer communities.

About the Role

The Distress Services Room Support (DSRS) is in the role of providing primary support and assistance to Crisis Services Responders (CSR) while they complete their Distress Services (DS) shifts at the Crisis Centre.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide DS volunteers and paid responders with on-site support, respectful guidance and supervision in their DS room activities
  • Assist with the management of DS documentation review for purposes of responding to volunteers needing follow-up re: difficult or unusual calls/chats, or to volunteers needing encouragement, support, policy/procedure clarification or skill upgrading
  • Assist in ensuring quality and efficiency of DS provision through on-site consultation, written feedback, and Staff Requested Follow-up
  • Assist with system of management of return and sex callers
  • Assist with the ongoing learning and support of new crisis responders
  • Assist with, approve, and complete emergency and crisis interventions for callers/chatters
  • Mandatory participation in DS staff meetings, as required
  • Update self on any changing procedures and emergent volunteer and/or caller concerns by reading through and participating in the Crisis Centre Forum, as well as reading through updates to the Operations Manual each shift
  • Ensure ethical standards are upheld in volunteers’ work with both clients and fellow

volunteers

  • Assist with emergency scheduling needs for volunteers and CSRs as needed
  • Provide back-up and vacation relief to other DSRS staff, including Weekend DSRS
  • Participate in staff on-call rotation – minimum once every 4 weeks, unless unable due to medical condition or other circumstance
  • Other duties as may be required

  • Ability to help to create and maintain a culture of ongoing learning, and connected community 
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision 
  • Ability to seek supervision as needed 
  • Excellent interpersonal and critical thinking skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to interface with different roles in the DS Program 
  • Solid familiarity with iCarol software 
  • Solid familiarity with CC resources, ERD, Healthlink BC, BC211 and other resources materials 
  • Ability to navigate stressful and ambiguous situations 
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and sensitivity to various roles and functions during service delivery 
  • Ability to adapt to change 

Qualifications

  • Experience with volunteer supervision and support an asset
  • Successful completion of all DS training components, monitoring, and hours required during initial commitment
  • This position requires obtaining & maintaining a satisfactory Criminal Record plus Vulnerable Sector Check

 

Working Conditions

This is a casual position with no guaranteed hours or set schedule. Typical shifts are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., or 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Shifts are assigned in accordance with the Organization's scheduling practices and operational needs and may include evenings, weekends, and on-call shifts as required. This position is primarily onsite; however, employees may be assigned remote Distress Services Room Support shifts and remote on-call shifts based on operational requirements at the discretion of your supervisor.
