OVERVIEW

 

Provides pharmacy services to patients/medical practitioners. Receives, fills prescriptions, dispenses pharmaceuticals, consults with clients regarding the nature and use of drugs, and trains and/or supervises personnel. Performs routine quality control testing procedures; prepares and maintains all necessary records required by federal, state and local regulations.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES

 

1.        Reviews, prepares and/or oversees the preparation and dispensing of pharmaceuticals to patients or medical practitioners; makes decisions regarding generic substitution of prescribed pharmaceuticals.

2.       Consults with patients and/or medical practitioners on drug indications/contraindications, dosage, drug interactions, and side effects; provides other drug and pharmaceutical information as appropriate.

3.       Oversees the acquisition and disbursement of drugs and medications to various offices, clinics, and other sites.

4.      Provides education, guidance and training to students, pharmacy interns, and or trainees during course of work and monitors performance.

5.       Establishes and maintains methods and manner of storage and recordkeeping systems to provide for safekeeping of pharmaceuticals.

6.       May take patient's histories as required; makes initial clinical assessments and refers patients to appropriate clinicians.

7.       Performs routine quality control testing of equipment, environment and record keeping as required by federal, state and local regulations.

8.       Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.

9.       Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

10.    Processes vendor invoices; monitors status of outstanding purchase orders and enters electronic requests for new orders or revisions to existing orders, as appropriate.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

 

                      Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.

                      Knowledge of local, State, and Federal laws and regulations pertaining to pharmacy.

                      Knowledge of drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration.

                      Ability to assess patient care charts and patient histories.

                      Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures.

                      Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

                      Skill in the use of computers and related software applications.

                      Knowledge of policies and regulations pertaining to the disbursement of pharmaceutical drugs.

                      Adherence to pharmacy law with regard to the proper dispensing of medications

                      Ability to supervise and aid in the training of assigned staff.

                      Ability to implement necessary workflow based on clinic schedules and incoming orders.

                      Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.

 

 

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

Position requires: a) practice of professional pharmacy in a clinical pharmacy setting; b) independent preparation, and dispensing, of prescription medications; c) use of independent judgment in the provision of information and consultation to the public and health care professionals on the nature and use of drugs; d) training and supervision of pharmacy interns and/or technical support staff; e) utilization of a computerized pharmacy data entry system.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

 

                      May require discipline-specific licensure and/or professional certification, as specified by the department in the preferences.

                      Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

                      May be subject to credentialing process; must maintain credentialed status with state board(s) of Pharmacy

 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

 

                      Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

                      Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
