A Shop Diesel Technician is responsible for diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical issues on diesel-powered vehicles within a shop environment, performing routine maintenance, utilizing diagnostic tools to identify problems, and ensuring vehicles meet safety and emission standards by completing repairs according to manufacturer specifications and industry best practices; requiring a strong understanding of diesel engine systems, electrical components, and hydraulics, as well as proficiency with specialized repair tools and diagnostic software. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Diagnostic Inspections: Conduct thorough inspections of diesel vehicles to identify malfunctions, including checking fluid levels, inspecting engine components, and performing diagnostic tests using computer-aided systems.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, filter replacements, tire rotations, and inspections to prevent breakdowns and ensure optimal vehicle performance.
  • Repair and Overhaul: Disassemble, repair, and reassemble various diesel engine components including fuel systems, cooling systems, electrical systems, transmission, brakes, and exhaust systems.
  • Component Replacement: Replace worn or damaged parts on diesel vehicles, ensuring proper fit and function.
  • Troubleshooting: Utilize technical manuals and diagnostic tools to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues and identify root causes of malfunctions.
  • Test Drives: Conduct test drives to verify repairs and ensure proper vehicle functionality.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed records of repairs, parts used, and service performed on each vehicle.
  • Compliance: Adhere to all safety regulations and industry standards, including DOT inspections and emission control requirements.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Technical Expertise: Extensive knowledge of diesel engine operation, components, and repair procedures.
  • Diagnostic Skills: Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and software to identify and troubleshoot engine problems.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong hand-on mechanical skills with the ability to disassemble, repair, and reassemble complex systems.
  • Safety Awareness: Commitment to following safety protocols and maintaining a clean work environment.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to analyze problems, identify potential solutions, and implement repairs effectively.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent 
  • Completion of a certified diesel technician training program 
  • Several years of experience as a diesel technician in a shop environment
