Position Overview

This is a full-time position reporting to Camp Kindle Program Manager. The Camp Program Coordinator’s primary function is to facilitate the operations, protocols and services related to camps and outdoor programming at Camp Kindle, especially in relation to the specific tasks outlined below: 

Key Areas of Responsibilities

General Duties

  • Positively contributes to Kids Cancer Care and Camp Kindle by working well with all members of the camp community. Also forming relationships with our community and providing and encouraging a positive, safe environment for all members. 
  • Aware of the needs of young people affected by cancer and their families.
  • Eager to complete initial training and engage in ongoing training provided and attending leadership workshops.
  • Consistently adheres to Camp Kindle’s three pillars of respect: 1) respect for self, 2) respect for others, and 3) respect for the environment.
  • Actively works to develop personal and professional skills, accepts and incorporates constructive feedback in all operations.
  • Follows all Kids Cancer Care and Camp Kindle policies and procedures, applying them to camp and ensuring program staff are following them and are aware of any changes.
  • Acts in the best interest of participants and the organization, being positive representations of camp.
  • Contributes to weekly staff meetings, communicating on any updates across departments areas of camp, including maintenance, kitchen and admin.
  • Contributes to site organization, preparation and upkeep.
  • Establishes and maintains working relationships with other related agencies.

Program Development and Administration

  • Has a working knowledge of the Alberta Camping Association’s operating guidelines for residential camps and the operating guidelines for oncology camps, including those of the Children’s Oncology Camping Association International.
  • Understands and implements the vision, mission and goals for each camp program.
  • Works with the Camp Program Manager to successfully develop, implement and assess inclusive, relevant, and exceptional camp programs offered at Camp Kindle, which include: 
    • Kids Cancer Care programs for families affected by cancer – residential summer camp, summer outdoor leadership programs, summer leadership development program, year-round teen and weekend family camps.
    • Camp Kindle Programs – specialized summer programs for children with other unique medical concerns such as hemophilia and diabetes; spring and fall elementary school; junior and senior outdoor leadership; community youth and adult team building and corporate team building.
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Outreach and the Nursing Coordinator to ensure that the medical and health needs of all participants are met at camp.
  • Writes program reports, maintains monthly reporting statistics and compiles annual reporting measures for all Kids Cancer Care’s camp programs.
    • Develops and establishes themes for core KCC summer groups, Family Camp and Teen Camp. This includes creating storylines, décor and on theme activities.
  • Manages program budgets.
  • Responds in a timely fashion to all business communications.
  • Updates and utilizes camper database to record camper information and generate all reports and lists needed for programs.
    • Attending the Alberta Camping Association conference, being present for workshops, contributing to seminars and networking with other camps and individuals. 
    • Assists in coordinating the Leadership Development Program, overseeing interviews, scheduling and programming completed by leadership staff.
    • Assists with KCC events hosted at camp, including KAMp, AYA Weekend hangouts, KCC Volunteer Training Can Do, High Hopes, Cycle Challenge, KCC Board Retreat and Dad’s Weekend. Helping with scheduling, staffing and programming details. 

Staff Development

  • Ensures that all Kids Cancer Care’s policies are followed.
  • Reviews applications and completes interviews as directed by the Camp Program Manager. 
  • Works with the Camp Program Manager and Human Resources to complete hiring process with staff, assisting with SINs, bank accounts and visa applications for international staff. 
  • Provides leadership, training, support, and guidance to all seasonal program staff, leading them through program, housekeeping, kitchen, and maintenance training schedules. 
    • Spring and Fall training details teaching educational programs in accordance with school curriculum, dining hall & group management, policies and procedures.
    • Debrief after groups and rentals, talk through development and provide constructive feedback to implement for future rentals. 
    • Providing midpoint check-ins and performance evaluations with Senior & Leadership staff during the summer season. 
    • Providing transportation to and from the airport, Service Canada, banks and other work-related excursions for international staff to set them up accordingly for working and living in Canada. 

Volunteer Development

  • In cooperation with the Volunteer Coordinator and Camp Program Manager, helps train, supervise, and manage volunteers.
  • Revises and maintains the Camp Team Manual in cooperation with the Volunteer Coordinator and Camp Program Manager.
    • Help organize and lead Volunteer training weekend, providing support and knowledge to summer volunteers.

Social Enterprise

  • Contributes to the development of Camp Kindle’s social enterprise by working with rental groups prior to arrival to ensure all details are in place for their visit. This includes communicating with rental groups on the content of programs and scheduling. This also includes checking in with the rental groups throughout their stay to ensure everything is running smoothly, problem solve issues that may arise or any changes they would like to make. 
  • Coordinates staff and ensures a high-quality experience for all rental groups. This includes prepping the staff before arrivals by going through scheduling, assigning roles and duties for programs and communicating with the chosen point of contact from the staff team, ensuring they have the knowledge and ability to help organize the group. 
  • Working with Camp Kindle management team to market Camp Kindle facilities to guests and groups.
  • Assists in program development and implementation of programs for outdoor education groups and rental groups.

Attaining CUI Level two Certification Overseeing all Ropes and Challenge Course activities such as:

  • Ensuring maintenance on all Ropes based activities are up to date.
  • Checking rope’s logs are all in order and safely stored.
  • Maintaining equipment for use on all rope's activities, ensuring they are up to standard and logging any broken equipment, Fixing broken equipment.
  • Ensuring Rescue bag is ready to go if needed.
  • Ordering any new equipment needed. 
  • Teaching Seasonal staff on how to set up, facilitate, run, and take down all rope’s activities run at Camp Kindle.
  • Rope retrievals and aerial inspections via Staff Access.
  • Working with CUI Course Inspectors to go through inspections Annually.

Qualifications

  • University degree, or post-secondary education with experience in the fields of recreation, education, kinesiology – with a major in adapted physical activity, child development studies or related social field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in program planning with varying group size and with children, teens, staff and volunteers.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills, self-motivated and result driven.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, with frequent evening and weekend work.
  • A demonstrated ability with computers and relevant software (Office, MailChimp, Canva). Database proficiency with CampBrain is an asset. 
  • Ensure policies and guidelines of KCC are adhered to across all programs.
  • Work well under pressure and can manage multiple priorities and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in both a team environment and individually.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, including excellent telephone manner is required.
  • Must provide a current Level II Criminal Records Check which includes Vulnerable Sector.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable car.
  • Certificate in CPR level C and First Aid.
