Job Summary

The Maintenance and Janitor Worker plays a critical role in ensuring that NVSSS’s facilities, including the shelter and grounds, are safe, clean, and well-maintained. This position involves general cleaning, routine maintenance, and minor repairs to support a safe, welcoming environment for shelter guests, staff, and visitors. The Maintenance/Janitor works closely with the Executive Director to address facility needs promptly and effectively.

Key Responsibilities

Janitorial Duties

  • Perform daily cleaning and sanitizing of common areas, bathrooms, kitchens, dining areas, offices, and shelter spaces.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and disinfect floors and surfaces.
  • Remove garbage, recycling, and hazardous materials safely.
  • Restock supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
  • Clean windows, walls, and other high-touch surfaces as needed.

Maintenance Duties

  • Conduct regular inspections of shelter facilities and equipment.
  • Perform minor repairs (plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, patching walls).
  • Maintain building systems (lighting, heating/cooling filters, appliances).
  • Respond promptly to urgent maintenance issues or safety hazards.
  • Assist with snow removal, salting walkways, lawn care, and seasonal outdoor upkeep.
  • Support staff with furniture moves, event setup, and special projects.

Health & Safety

  • Follow all NVSSS health and safety policies, WorkSafeBC guidelines, and infection control standards.
  • Report hazards, damages, or repair needs to the Shelter Manager.
  • Support emergency procedures (fire drills, equipment checks, etc.).

Qualifications & Skills

  • Previous experience in janitorial, custodial, or maintenance work preferred.
  • Knowledge of cleaning procedures, safe use of cleaning chemicals, and basic repair skills.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools safely.
  • Good communication skills and ability to follow instructions.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and stand or bend for extended periods.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Awareness of working in environments serving vulnerable populations (asset).
  • Valid driver’s license (preferred, not mandatory).

Working Conditions

  • Position may be part-time or full-time, depending on operational needs.
  • Work performed indoors and outdoors in all seasons.
  • Moderate to heavy physical activity, with exposure to cleaning agents and maintenance equipment.
  • May require occasional evening, weekend, or holiday shifts.

Additional Requirements

  • Legal authorization to work in Canada.
  • Satisfactory criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening (required).
  • Agreement to NVSSS’s Privacy and Confidentiality policies.
